WHAT I'M DOING ON THIS SUPER BOWL 60 SUNDAY

Sunday has become a special day for me.

  • I rest my body.  No exercising.
  • Usually I stay at home to relax.
  • This Super Bowl Sunday will not be much different, but I'll eat and drink more, maybe to excess.
In past Super Bowls, I've sometimes hosted, many times gone to parties, and remember one Sunday when I missed the game.  This was in 2010 when I was in New Delhi, India.

Let's forget yesterday. I'm appalled that I said "India Sucks."

Today, though, was not much different, but my attitude has re-adjusted and returned to my normal self. To begin, can you believe there are 82 HD channels, and at the time of the Super Bowl, there were 6 soccer matches, 2 rugby, 2 badminton, 1 tennis, 1 golf, 1 auto racing, 3 cricket and, on ESPN, a SEC gymnastics competition. NO SUPER BOWL in Delhi. Anyway, I couldn't have caught all of it as at 6:15AM I was picked up for my Taj Mahal encounter, the primary reason why I'm on this trip.

  • About the posting title, India Sucks, that too was written in 2010, and it was a noteworthy work of art, for I got 73 comments, most of them agreeing with me, and sprinkled with incredible humor.  Click on India Sucks, and read the comments.

Today, I'll mostly be alone.  15 Craigside televises the game in our theater. Note that the Super Bowl has not been cancelled.  The religious gathering has.  15 Craigside is owned by a church, and Sunday is a holy day here with various religious activities.

Note the pickup.  Not sure what will be provided, but things like boiled peanuts, nuts, chips, wine and beer are provided.  Here is where I hope to get my Bud.

Breakfast began with my going to our coffee machine, where I took back expresso, hot chocolate and french vanilla coffee.

Breakfast started with hot and cold Chinatown Fortune Cookie Martinis.  These are the ingredients:

  • 1.5 - 2 oz Vanilla Vodka
  • 1 - 1.5 oz Amaretto Liqueur
  • 1 - 2 oz Baileys Irish Cream
  • 0.5 - 1 oz Coffee Cold Brew (adds depth to the, often omitted in home versions)
  • Garnish: Chocolate-dipped fortune cookie
  • Ice

My version depended on what I had on hand, and the amazing thing is that I was just gifted these chocolate-dipped fortune cookies.  I have a dozen vodkas, and some are exotic.  My Baileys Irish Cream was made up of Half and Half Milk, hot chocolate and vodka.  No Amaretto Liqueur, but I don't like it anyway.

By the way, TV watching began at 8AM, when the Super Bowl pre-game shows started.  The Puppy Bowl also.  The Winter Olympics are televised all day on the USA network and Peacock.

I'm more watching the golf tournament than the Winter Olympics or pre-game Super Bowl.  That PGA event began as the Arizona open in 1932, Phoenix Open in 1935, FBR Open in 2004, Waste Management Phoenix Open in 2010, and finally rebranded as the WM Phoenix Open.  Called The Greatest Show on Grass due to the high-attendance rowdy crowd in Scottsdale, Arizona.  This is the only PGA tournament that actively encourages raucous behavior, especially in the fully enclosed 16th hole with more than 20,000 fans who cheer, jeer and make a lot of noise.  With more than 700,000 spectators for the week, it is also most popular in attendance.  Hideki Matsuyama has been in the lead all week, but Scottie Scheffler is making a patented run.

Back to my Super Bowl Sunday, I kept changing my mind about lunch.

  • I originally was planning to have New England Clam Chowder and salmon, to represent both teams.
  • However, we were given a large bento box of Chinese Roast Duck, worth at least $50, so that will replace the fish.  After all, the Seattle nickname is Seahawk, not Seafish.
  • And, by the way, I'm wearing all blue today, a color more identified with the Patriots, but one of the Seahawks colors is Navy Blue, and my shirt is oceanic, with Pelagic on the front.
Snack?  Just a hot dog, but no bun, so I'll use a croissant, with a Kosher dill pickle, plus a Budweiser beer, if one is given at 15 Craigside's free snack stand, which operates on days like this.

More times than not, I've accompanied my game/commercial watching with Johnny Walker Blue Label on Rocks.  Plan to again today.

So on Super Bowl LX itself.

  • If you live in the Bay Area, you can't just walk up to the Levi's Stadium box office and buy a ticket.
  • You can, though, go to your computer and use Ticketmaster, StubHub and other online services for resales available up to 60 minutes AFTER kickoff.  Will cost you from $4500 to $7000 per seat.

But why go when there are various ways to stream the game live.

  • Of course, there is your local NBC station, for free.  At 6:30PM ET.  Our cable system at 15 Craigside is free, which now includes Peacock.
  • For those who need to watch with your iPhone, streaming is not free, though there are ways.
    • In addition, Fubo and NBC never did work out a deal to cooperate.
    • Other options are Peacock, Hulu, and Tubi.
    • Get a You Tube subscription, then quit after the free trial.
    • You need to buy one, but a digital antenna can catch NBC on your home TV.
Final notes about Super Bowls.
  • Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl 1 in 1967.  Tickets cost $12 each.  Max McGee of the Packers made the first touchdown.  That was almost 60 years ago.  The Packers also won the SB2.  That's coach Vince Lombardi.
  • Tom Brady has won 5 Super Bowl MVP awards.  He was also the oldest player in a SB, SBLV.  He is now 48, and feels he can still play.  However, he is a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, which prevents him from unretiring.
  • Miami and New Orleans have hosted the most Super Bowls.  Eleven.
  • Carol Channing was the first halftime performer, in 1970, at SBIV.
  • In SBXXIX, the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers scored a combined 75 points.
  • SBLIII had only 16 points.  New England Patriots vs Los Rams.  This number is important, for I have the lowest number for this SB in the 15 Craigside pool.  23.
  • Only one game has gone overtime:  New England Patriots vs Atlanta Falcons.
  • The New England Patriots and Denver Broncos have lost the most SBs.  5.
  • The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos by 45 points in SBXXIV.
  • No Super Bowl has ever been played outside the USA.
  • Only one team has finished undefeated and won the SB.  The 1972 Miami Dolphins.  They scored the fewest point in SBVI.
  • Americans eat 1.42 billion chicken wings during the SB.
  • Supposedly Super Bowl spending/person in the U.S. is $85.36.
  • There will be 120 million TV viewers.  However, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 engaged 5 billion fans across all media, with the final between France vs Argentina getting 1.42 BILLION viewers.
  • The USA, Canada and Mexico are co-hosting the World Cup this year.

Return to view my lunch, halftime snack and other enjoyments of the day.

ON THE MATTER OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Fede...

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

THE TRUMP ENERGY PROGRAM

From  Time  magazine, I begin with a slew of Trump topics.  You can read the details. The unpopular Big Beautiful Bill is now in the House . The only truly effective anti-Trump person:  Elon Musk. The Trump Gaza ceasefire proposal . The July 4th Free American Anti-Trump Protest planned across the USA . This site began as a renewable energy and environment blog, and has evolved to just about any subject.  I try to keep Wednesdays for sci-tech, with perhaps a monthly focus on energy.  More recently, I've drawn from the  Energy Matters  info sent to me by the American Energy Society.  I'm inserting direct quotes this time to eliminate my predilections for more credibility. This service starts with some broad topics. - Fossil fuels: Helium is locked in a supply crunch, and prices are surging. - Renewables: Congress will probably pass new renewable fuel standards for 2026 and 2027. - Policy: President Trump is now focused on Califor...
