A NEXT STEP TOWARDS THE BLUE REVOLUTION

Had lunch yesterday with a colleague from Norway, Lars Golmen, and his family.  We mostly talked about world affairs and our past.  However, the discussion eventually settled on next generation fisheries, ocean thermal energy conversion, the Blue Revolution, and our possible plans to re-establish a global plan to accomplish these various tasks. Lars was the organizer in Norway, with Steven Masutani of Hawaii, for the Bergen Declaration. THE BERGEN DECLARATION ON  NEXT GENERATION FISHERIES  November 15, 2005 Whereas, fishing fleets need to travel greater distances for diminishing catches. Whereas, some aquacultured products may suffer from the concentration of chemical toxins or drugs, and may be affected by diseases. Whereas, the consumption of seafood is increasing relative to beef, chicken and pork, being stimulated by the growing human population and recognized nutritional benefits of bioproducts from the sea. Whereas, the seafood industry faces increasing challen...

CAN HAWAII LEAD THE WORLD IN DEVELOPING THE HYDROGEN ECONOMY?

I've long been the primary cheerleader for Hawaii being the world lead in the development of the   Blue Revolution .  Watch my  TEDx talk  of about a year ago.  But this effort "only" began a little more than three decades ago. My initial crusade, going way back into the 1970s, was hydrogen.  This inspiration came from my assignments at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory working on laser fusion.  After all, hydrogen is the most abundant element in the Universe ( 73% ), through fusion of hydrogen every star generates all the energy we notice in space, and combusted with oxygen from the atmosphere, the products are energy and water.   All fusion processes use isotopes of hydrogen. I mean, if any superior intelligence out there is trying to send us a message, this has to be it.   When I found myself in 1979 working for U.S. Senator Spark Matsunaga, my top agenda item was to somehow find a way to promote the hydrogen option....

A BRIEF SUMMARY OF HOW IMAGINATION LED TO WHAT I AM TODAY

First, from the   Sunday New York Times :  The Sunday Question:  How long will McCarthy last as speaker?  McCarthy's concession to win the job made it easier for hard-right lawmakers   to oust him,   so his tenure could be short.  But Democrats looking to cut deals with McCarthy could  supply votes to save him   if conservatives revolt. Also, tomorrow night, TCU vs Georgia for the NCAA football championship, and on Tuesday, the release of Prince Harry's memoir,  Spare . I yesterday watched on my local PBS channel,  First Contact:  An Alien Encounter , a British program dramatizing what would happen if we encountered an incoming alien signal and/or artifact.  While this  Guardian  review  did not take the effort too seriously, I did agree that it was mostly boring.  Yet, triggered was my posting of today on this subject, and the subject of the day...imagination.  Oh, here is a  list of 655 film...

SHOULD OUR OCEANS BE ONLY PRESERVED?

On Tuesdays I usually reach back into the past and repeat an early posting of importance, but today there will be two.  Let me start with  World Oceans Day , which is celebrated this month.  The concept was first proposed 30 years ago, around the time the concept of the  Blue Revolution  began to develop.  These international events about our seas almost always are devoted to "saving" our oceans, certainly not wisely utilizing them for the benefit of humanity. I've been in academia now for half a century.  Research funding is scarce for ocean resource development.  The National Science Foundation and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration focus their support just about only for science, not engineering, and more specifically to monitor and protect our seas.  The Department of Energy is more applications than pure science.  However, in the 1980's the UDOE hated ocean thermal energy conversion ( OTEC ).  Read my  14 Augu...
