THE DAY AFTER SUPER BOWL 60

This is Part 2 to my Super Bowl 60 experience yesterday, which you can read.  Nothing much is happening around the world, so after football, I'll move on to Winter Olympics 2026 highlights, and top events of today.

I left you after I had two (hot and cold) Chinatown Fortune  Cookie Martinis with fruits/yogurt for my Super Bowl breakfast.  Then came lunch.  As 15 Craigside gave away boiled peanuts and tortilla chips (plus Miller, but no Budweiser beer), I skipped the chinese roast duck and had these snacks with Bloody Mary and Bloody Maria.

Then those tortilla chips were converted to nachos.
Johnny Walker Blue Label on rocks for the game.

One of my 15 Craigside Super Bowl pool numbers was 23, meaning if the total score of the Seahawks and Patriots added up to that number, I would win.  I purposely picked a low number, in fact, the lowest. of those competing.  Thus, if the final total was 23 or lower, I would win all the money.  At halftime, the score was 9-0.  I was in great shape.  Then came Bad Bunny, I remember the early part, but must have fallen asleep in my recliner, for I don't remember much until the game was over, and the final score was 29-13, a total of 42.  A second number I had was 40, but I won nothing because one person had that number, and five had 41.
About Bad Bunny, there were some who hated it, like President Donald Trump, who said it was one of the worst ever.  My recollection was also not being impressed, when I provided the ultimate insult....I fell asleep.  Turns out that most of the internet and MAGA people gave Bunny awful reviews.  Top Democrats, like Gavin Newsome, loved the performance.

After the game I finally got around to having my New England Clam Chowder, with veggies and the rest of the tomato juice drink.
For Super Bowl fans, here is a video of game highlights.  Now that the game is over, CBS said these were the best and worst commercials, according to Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.
Now, on to the Olympics, as I said before, it's okay to be a super patriot during the Olympics.  On that note, here are Team USA's best moments from what is called Day 2 of Winter Olympics 2026, or for February 8, Sunday.  A particular highlight was the USA beating Japan 69 to 68 for the figure skating team gold, with Italy earning the bronze.
  • USA entered the final day with a large 5-point lead, which evaporated to a tie, when Ilia Malinin, known as the "Quad God," did indeed pull of five quadruple jumps to seal the win.  His backflip, I think, was the clincher.
  • Also key contributors were Pairs skaters Madison Chock/Evan Bates and Ellie Kam/Danny O'Shea, plus Amber Glenn and Alysa Liu.

So what's now happening?

  • The USA mixed doubles curling team of Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin beat Italy today, the past gold medalists in Beijing, to get to the gold medal game against Sweden.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, 2PM ET, or 9AM Hawaii time.  That game against Italy was particularly interesting, because the USA had lost to Italy in the final game of the round-robin session yesterday.  Then, today, Italy jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the USA overtook them at the end, 9-8.
  • Four years ago I featured Eileen Gu, who was born in San Francisco of an American father and Chinese mother, and chose China as her competing country.  She was 18 years old and headed for Stanford University, too.  What happened to her?
    • She was spectacular in Beijing, becoming the youngest Olympic champion in freestyle skiing after winning gold medals in big air and halfpipe, plus a silver medal in slopestyle.  Watch this video!
    • She then became a Buddhist.
    • Did go to Stanford after the Beijing games.
      • Has taken leaves of absence because of skiing.
      • Is an international relations major, but takes courses like quantum physics.
      • Joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
      • Studied abroad at the University of Oxford.
      • As of this month, has only completed two years towards an undergraduate degree.
      • Plans to return to Stanford for her junior year following the 2026 games.
    • So far this year in Italy has won a silver medal for women's freeski. (photo above)
  • The USA Women Ice Hockey team is at this moment leading Switzerland 5-0, and will play Canada tomorrow, Tuesday, at 2:10 PM ET or Hawaii 9:10 AM.

ON THE MATTER OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Fede...

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

THE TRUMP ENERGY PROGRAM

From  Time  magazine, I begin with a slew of Trump topics.  You can read the details. The unpopular Big Beautiful Bill is now in the House . The only truly effective anti-Trump person:  Elon Musk. The Trump Gaza ceasefire proposal . The July 4th Free American Anti-Trump Protest planned across the USA . This site began as a renewable energy and environment blog, and has evolved to just about any subject.  I try to keep Wednesdays for sci-tech, with perhaps a monthly focus on energy.  More recently, I've drawn from the  Energy Matters  info sent to me by the American Energy Society.  I'm inserting direct quotes this time to eliminate my predilections for more credibility. This service starts with some broad topics. - Fossil fuels: Helium is locked in a supply crunch, and prices are surging. - Renewables: Congress will probably pass new renewable fuel standards for 2026 and 2027. - Policy: President Trump is now focused on Califor...
