RED SPRITES OVER NEW ZEALAND

Before getting into my science topic of the day, here is an item I received this morning from the  New York Times .  There are fewer international students coming to the U.S. Why? The decline is occurring as the Trump administration has   delayed visa processing , instituted   travel bans   or restrictions for 19 countries,   threatened to deport   international students for   pro-Palestinian speech , and   heightened the vetting   of student visa applicants . The New York Times  also reported: The civil war in Sudan has displaced 12 million people and may have killed about 400,000. It is, as Declan Walsh, our chief Africa correspondent, called it, “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.” Experts call it a genocide. Read more about   the escapees from El Fasher . And finally a third story: Baby Shark:   In news from the world of apex predation, a pod of killer whales in the Gulf of California   hunts juvenile great wh...

HAPPINESS

Continuing the weekend, first, the University of Hawaii volleyball team lost to UCLA in the championship game.  Look for UCLA to repeat next year.  Had a nachos and beer, a follow-up to Cinco de Mayo. Had a  Woodford Spire  for the Kentucky Derby. The story of the day had to do with Cory...and his horse, Cody's Wish, which was running a in pre-race. Cody's Wish won.   Watch this story here . Heartwarming. I had mentioned getting Kentucky Fried Chicken to eat with the Woodford Spire to watch the Kentucky Derby, but heck, 15 Craigside also had fried chicken. What is the the most important matter in your life?  Some might say  family, others mention wealth, world peace, freedom, security, and hundreds of other notions.  Something called happiness appeals to me.  I am today very happy, and on the verge of  Euphoria #4 .  While on the recent Seabourn cruise  I almost attained that state , but never quite reached it. On this Sun...

SHALL WE DANCE: Part 1

From the New York Times : States that supported Donald Trump are the ones hesitant to be vaccinated.   Those who are choosing not : 49% of Republican men and 34% of women. 6% of Democratic men and 14% of women. Why the gender reversal? Both Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell have urged all Republicans to get vaccinated. Gretchen sent me the following: PBS national is releasing a three-part, three-hour series:   Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World   on Earth Day, Thursday April 22.   See your local listings. Here in Hawaii, we will see it   Wednesdays at 8:00 pm on 4/28, 5/5 and 5/12 . Sometimes one gets inspired by a conjunction of related events.  I focus on science, technology, cuisine, travel, the environment and a million other things, including music.  So today, dancing. Historical studies show that all cultures have dance in some form , said to be 9,000 years ago in India ( through cave paintings ) and 5300 years ago in Egypt, linked to reli...
