AT SEA: Taipei to Hong Kong to Ho Chi Minh City

Today, more doings on the Diamond Princess as we now head towards Tropical Storm Koto and Ho Chi Minh City.  Another evening, and it seems we've done this before. First, drinks in the Crooner's Bar. A quick pre-show dinner in the International Dining Room. Then to Princess Theater for a performance by the 60s Four, an Australian group, singing hit songs of the 70s.  They specialize in 60s songs, so another show will no doubt be coming.  The theater was fully packed. Okay show, but I only recognized half of their songs.  I think this was because there were many hits in Australia that never became popular in the USA.  Next to the Explorers for karaoke. Explorers for a Liars Club show, followed by karaoke. To Club Fusion for disco dancing, Mascot of ship is Stanley the Bear.   Walked 3535 steps on Day 8. Next day, we are in Hong Kong. Lunch of two noodles with sake and beer. Night came, and had drinks watching the lights of Hong Kong, The weather was comfortab...

NORWEGIAN ENCORE: Seattle to San Francisco

Day 4 Saturday, only 2335 steps. Then on Sunday, caught a taxi to Pier 66, Port of Seattle.  The Norwegian Encore. Normally, check-in takes an hour or two or more.  Taxi took us to baggage, where the porter handled it.  I had a walking cane, so I noticed that if you looked old with a cane, you can insinuate yourself into the priority lane, which usually has almost no one.  The standard line had at least 100 yards of people waiting to proceed.  In only a few minutes, we were whisked through the process. Our first lunch.  Mine included roasted tomato soup and a blue-cheese wedge salad, with a Chardonnay and Johnny Walker Black Label.  We bought the liquor package that allows unlimited alcoholic beverages.. Walked around.  Takes a while to get anywhere, for there are 20 decks, and hallways are really long. The ship was supposed to depart at 4pm, so we sat at the front of the Observatory Deck to have the best view to sea.  Gooney Bir...

KANAZAWA TO SAKAIMINATO

Kanazawa has a population of 466,029.  I came once just to try out the new Hokuriku Shinkansen in 2015.  This line will be extended to Fukui next year, with an eventual connection to Shin Osaka in 2045. We decided to skip the tours on this stop.  In fact, we might never take any, for we know enough about Japan, that we can get around by ourselves. But about  Kanazawa : It is the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture. The weather is said to be similar to Seattle.  A little wet. There has so far been no population decline. Kanazawa means marsh of gold, for legend has it that a peasant was digging for potatoes when flakes of gold washed up.  For that reason, dating back over 400 years, the city's artisans are famous for creating gold leaf crafts. Sister cities include Buffalo and Ghent, Belgium. Kanazawa University is a national university, tracing its beginnings to 1862. Kanazawa Castle was reconstructed in 2001 Kenrokuen Garden is one of three gems of Japan. Locate...
