THE EAGLES

Some have compared the American rock band, The Eagles, with the British Beatles.  Don Henley of the Eagles has said that while they are now and then mentioned, the Beatles are in a league of their own.

  • The Beatles performed from 1960 to 1970, and only toured from 1961 to 1966.
    • Beatlemania spanned from late 1963 to their final commercial concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on 29August 1966.
    • They released 213 songs, 188 original compositions and 25 covers.
  • The Eagles formed in Los Angeles in 1971, blending country, folk and soft rock.
  • The Eagles were founded in 1971 by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. Blended country, folk and soft rock.  Linda Ronstadt tapped them as her backing band for her third solo studio album in 1972 before they took off with their debut later that year.  Later members included Joe Walsh, Don Felder and Timothy Schmit.
  • Their 1976-released Greatest Hits took half a century, but this year became the first album to earn a 4x Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, or 40 million units sold.  Greatest selling album in the USA.  Listen to the 44-minute vinyl full album.

  • That album did not even include Hotel California, my favorite.  Why?  Because this hit was recorded in 1976.  Won the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1978.  Is lengthy:  6 minutes and 38 seconds.
  • Like Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote most of the Beatles songs, Don Henley and Glenn Frey did so for the Eagles, with contributions from members.
  • The Beatles released 213 songs, 188 originals; the Eagles, 90, with most written by them.
  • The Beatles are the best-selling band in history, with worldwide album sales surpassing 600 million, worth more than $5 billion.
  • The Eagles stand at more than 200 million albums and $400 million.
  • A huge difference between the two bands is that The Eagles are still touring.  In fact, we will be in Las Vegas in March, and they will be there for a few shows in the Sphere, one of the items on my bucket list.  Then they perform in New Orleans, but just after we depart.  The group has stopped through Hawaii five times, and I went to their 1995 concert.

Not much happening at the Winter Olympics for U.S. athletes today.

  • Jordan Stolz has one more chance to add to his medal collection men's speedskating.
  • Three USA teams are still competing for medals in the two-women bobsled.
  • Eileen Gu has her last chance for gold in Milan.  Well, actually, this event was snowed under, and will occur tomorrow.

Tomorrow will be the final day.

  • The women's ice hockey team you must know by now beat Canada for their gold.
    • The men's play Canada tomorrow.
    • If you have Netflix, you can get into the mood by watching Miracle, The Boys of '80, a documentary of the USA men's team beating the vaunted Soviet machine.  That was the last time the men's team won a gold medal in this event.  Was, maybe, the crucial spark that led to the demise of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War a little more than a decade later.  Canada is not quite the Soviet Union, but they have a similar feeling, and thus competitive spirt, this time against the USA because of our President.
  • The Closing Ceremony tomorrow will feature Italy handing the Olympic flag to French for the 2030 Games, which will be held in Chamonix....which is closer to Milan than Milan is from Cortina d'Ampezzo.  Then, the 2034 Winter Olympics will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Current standings by gold medals won:

  • Norway: 40 Medals (18 Gold – 11 Silver – 11 Bronze)
  • United States: 31 (11 – 12 – 8)
  • Netherlands: 20 (10 – 7 – 3)
  • Italy: 30 (10 – 6 – 14)
  • France: 23 (8 – 9 – 6)
  • Germany: 22 (6 – 8 – 8)
  • Switzerland: 20 (6 – 8 – 6)
  • Austria: 18 (5 – 8 – 5)
  • Japan: 24 (5 – 7 – 12)
  • Canada: 19 (4 – 6 – 9)

I should finish with King Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo of Norway.  He broke the record for the most gold medals won at a single Winter Olympics with six, all in cross-country skiing.  If a country, he would be tied with Germany and Switzerland.

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...
