PANAMA CITY

  The end of Day 15 was dinner. Only walked 2729 steps today. Day 16, and we are in Panama City. I think this is the Viking Mars, also in port.  After we arrive in Southampton, we fly to Amsterdam to catch The Viking Vali on a Christmas River Cruise to Budapest. Lunch today was another bowl of noodles, with a Margarita and glass of Merlot. Ending with a flan. As my  blog from way back in 2013 indicated , I know a couple who once lived in Hawaii.  Judy and John Collins might be the most famous people I know.  They founded the Ironman Triathlon.  I found a  Coronado article  on 2021 which provided a lot of information, and how the family was still active in the triathlon, or smaller versions of them. John was a Navy Seal and true athlete.  Judy might have been more competitive, for she was the first female to ever swim between two Hawaiian islands.  It was on Mother's Day in 1977 when she swam from Lanai to Maui.  Judy worked for me o...

HOW DANGEROUS ARE MARATHONS, ULTRAMARATHONS AND THE IRONMAN TRIATHLON?

Those two ultramarathon incidents that recently occurred seemed more appropriate for today, so I'll post on Part 2 of SETI tomorrow.  When I taught at the University of Hawaii, my next door neighbor on the Manoa Campus was Gordon Dugan, who ran races of long distances, up to 100 miles.   We team-taught Environmental Engineering a couple times, and we still get together for lunch every so often.   He is a hall of fame star, sitting in the middle of that photo.  He is still alive.  I mention this because that is the theme of this article. A third of a century ago I had a golf foursome on Saturdays.  The other three all ran marathons.  One of them never trained, just showing up that particular Sunday morning in December for the Honolulu Marathon.  Did this for several continuous years, almost dying each time.  Once I was there to watch and he was coming down the home stretch, the crowd was cheering, there was someone ahead of him, so h...
