WHAT IS RAMADAN?

Way back 45 years ago when I was working in the U.S. Senate, I overheard Senator Scoop Jackson talking to Senator Bill Bradley about problems in the Middle East.  This was a time when the second energy crisis was at its worst, with gas lines.  I remember the look on Jackson's face exclaiming that this is Ramadan, so what can we do? Ramadan?  What was Ramadan?  Since then I've educated myself.  My blog site has covered this topic numerous times.   In 2019 I posted on WHAT IS RAMADAN? How many of you knew that the 1.5 billion Muslims are currently fasting, in their most sacred month, Ramadan, marking when Allah first gave chapters of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad in 610?  The consumption of food, sex and smoking of course are allowed after sunset to  sunrise.  Mind you, not even drinking of water during daylight.  This year, it began around May 5, depending on the sighting of the moon, and will begin to end tomorrow ( in the USA ), when you finish the fast by eating dates dur

THE NEXT FEW DAYS WILL BE MOST INTERESTING

Tomorrow begins Ramadan.  For those who don't know what is Ramadan, I will on Sunday provide some history.  As such, there was hope for peace in the Gaza Strip by the end of today.  Apparently,   not going to happen , for both the Hamas and Israel are not backing off on must requirements.  While both have their points, I think the biggest source of irritation is PM Netanyahu, who wants to totally obliterate any future terrorism against Israel.  Even a long cease fire will threaten his leadership. What about aid to Ukraine?  Well, still no progress in the House.  However,  looks like something will be worked out by March 22 , when the Republicans again play brinksmanship about closing down the Federal government. Tonight is when you need to spring forward, that is, this is Spring, so you must set your clock forward an hour.  Which means you will have one less hour of sleep.  Why we continue to do this back and forth every year remains confounding.  Daylight saving time has been arou

A RELIGIOUS VIEW OF THIS COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Yesterday was a big sports watching day on TV, with the Gonzaga win over UCLA the most exciting.  The Pac-10 did well this year.  For the first time in my memory, not one team East of the Mississippi River made the Final Four.  To solidify the return of the West, the two women's team in the championship game are Stanford and Arizona.  And, oh, in my ESPN Tournament Challenge I did predict Gonzaga against Baylor for the men's championship, which comes on tomorrow night: I also watched a lot of Major League Baseball, and the star no doubt was Yermin Mercedes, a rookie for the Chicago White Sox, who started his career with eight straight hits.  No one in the modern era, which means from 1900, has ever done that.  So impressed me that I picked him up on all four of my fantasy teams.  You can see him on ESPN after the women's NCAA basketball championship today.  About Mercedes, he is already 28 and has done nothing much in minor league baseball for the past decade. Finally, I c
