THE WORLD TODAY

I'll begin this week with a quick summary of what is happening in the U.S. and World.  The U.S. Supreme Court went into session today.  Don't expect much this year.  How to survive President Trump will be their primary goal. The Nobel Prize announcements have begun. Six of them are awarded in physics, chemistry, physiology/medicine, literature, peace and economics. Established by the will of Swedish inventor ( dynamite )  Alfred Nobel  since 1901.  The award in economics was added in 1969. Swedish organizations select the winners in all categories, except for peace, which comes from Norway.  Why?  No one knows for sure, except that this was specified in Nobel's will. Today, U.S. scientists Mary Rundow (64) and Fred Ramsdell (64), and Japan's Shimon Sakaguchi (74), were named recipients of the  prize for medicine.   Their work relates to how we keep our immune system under control.  They each get $400,000, but more importantly...

SUNDAY, 16FEBRUARY2025

This is Sunday, February 16, 2025.  What has happened in history on this day? First, this is the 47th day of the year, with 318 days left in 2025.  Not a leap year. Donald Trump is the 47th PUS  ( P resident of the  U nited  S tates). According to  Wikipedia . 1796  The British conquered Ceylon, now called Sri Lanka. 1923  Howard Carter unsealed the burial chamber on Pharaoh Tutankhamun. 1937  Wallace Carothers receives a U.S. patent for nylon. 1959  Fidel Castro became Premier, or El Comandante, of Cuba. He served in this capacity for 32 years. 1968  9-1-1 emergency telephone system goes into service, in Alabama. 1985  Hezbollah is founded in Lebanon. 2006  The last Mash (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) is decommissioned. In other words, nothing much happened in history on this day. Watch a  short video of February 6 .  And  another .  By  Dr. Zarr . As of today,  ranking of most famous Genera...

2023 WILL BE THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD

I've been on a long trip and have not said much about Ukraine, Israel, Donald Trump and global warming.  I don't feel particularly spiritual today, so will spend this Sunday on the latter. The media have trumpeted the seriousness of how hot Planet Earth's atmosphere is getting. A new report by the  Global Climate Project consortium  says that we will reach an all-time high this year in carbon emissions.  I thought renewables and conservation measures were beginning to work.  Guess not, especially in reducing coal usage.   Meanwhile, the USA has done well.  What are those emission numbers on the second graphic?  The graph was obscured, but the trends look good.   You can go to this article for details . The  World Meteorological  Organization and Europe's Copernicus Climate Change Service  reported that 2023 will certainly be the warmest year on record, with last month being the hottest November. With all that happenin...
