DAVID BROOKS SAYS GOODBYE

I was reading the  Honolulu Star-Advertiser  this morning, and noticed a  farewell column in The New York Times by David Brooks.   He is one of the stars of op-ed ( opposite the editorial page ) news writing, and I'm sad to see him go.  He made a lot of sense.   Of course, there are some others who did not like him.   Chump Lady,  for example.  Here is how she started her column today. Columnist David Brooks says goodbye to his New York Times gig and lectures us all on morality. Which is always rich coming from the guy who left his wife for his much younger research assistant.   Say it isn’t so! David Brooks is leaving his job at the New York Times as finger-wagging moralist,   deli meat snob , and righteous   scold of single mothers . He doesn’t say exactly what his next job is, but you know he’ll be quoting Edmund Burke. The Guardian   had a particularly telling critique, beginning with: The New York Tim...

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP on THE ECONOMY and OTHER MATTERS

President Donald Trump said this weekend: Is not joking about a third term .  Which is better for the U.S. than he unilaterally just becoming a dictator. Will absolutely deliver on his massive  reciprocal tariff plan on April 2 .  He dubs it Liberation Day. Reasserted that the  U.S. would 100% annex Greenland . Will ban refugees....except for White South Africans .  Guess from where comes Elon Musk?  If so, how many refugees has so far expressed interest?   67,000 . Will approve Canadian firm, The Metals Company, to  mine the deep seabed , circumventing international law, drawing denouncement from 40 countries. Lethargic help to Myanmar  recovering from the damage caused by a 7.7 earthquake.  USAID cuts reduces our ability to provide assistance worldwide. Very angry and pissed off at Vladimir Putin  for continuing the Ukraine-Russia War, a first for Trump, who has been giving the Ukraine house away. From the New York Time...

HOW GOOD ARE PREDICTIONS OF WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT YEAR?

I regularly try to predict the future on this first day of the year.  Sometimes I review how I did at the end of that year.   On  December 31, 2012, I predicted what would happen by the Year 2020, or eight years into the future .   The most important thing, although this was not a prediction, was that I made it into 2020.  All my life I've wanted to do this, for 2020 was 36 years away when i n 1974 I was part of a NASA effort to educate the public about Planet Earth .  I came up with the program name:  Earth 2020. So, anyway, on  January 2, 2020, I looked back  on my prognostications.  Had eight wrongs and two rights. So while  I admitted that I'm clearly not a seer , I mischievously predicted what I thought would surely occur in 2020.  I did not anticipate the pandemic, so while I was mostly right, including the UK leaving the European Union and Donald Trump losing his re-election attempt, the Dubai World Expo...
