NEUTRINOS: The Smallest and Most Baffling Particles in the Universe

How screwed up the House of Representatives must be.  They tried, and   could not even impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.   Why did they even try?  Well, Donald Trump told them to do so. Speaker Mike Johnson doesn't want aid for Ukraine.  So he also yesterday tried to sneak though only aid for Israel.  That vote, too, failed to pass.  He said he would next week still attempt to impeach Mayorkas.  In the Senate, thanks to Donald Trump, it looks like the immigration part is holding back their aid package.   Senate President Chuck Schumer  now plans to bring to a vote only the Israel/Ukraine/Taiwan financial portion. I have long been fascinated with the  neutrino .   Why? It is the smallest particle, with the electron as #2.  Neither has yet been actually measured for mass size. Elementary particles  form matter and radiation. There are two kinds of particles, Fermion and Boson.  Remember fermion, because it was named after Enrico Fermi, the godfather of neutrinos

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN

By now you know that Donald Trump won the New Hampshire Republican primary by double digits, an unimpressive "only" 11%.  The way the upcoming primaries are shaping up, Nikki Haley has no chance of overtaking Trump, and,  as I detailed yesterday, the best hope for any kind of Republican victory is for Trump to embrace Haley as his vice-presidential running mate .  It was mostly a waste of time and effort for Democrats, but  Joe Biden also won , easily, through a write-in campaign. Last week Wednesday , I compared the two scientific journals most respected by researchers and academia.  From  Quora : But  iLovePhD  shows that #2 is not  Science , but  The New England Journal of Medicine , which is fine for the medical profession.  I thought the  Journal of the American Medical Association  would be higher rated, but it is only at #11. Last week,  FeedSpot  listed its 45 Best Science Magazines. Science  is #1. Scientific American  #2. Discover Magazin e #5. Popular Science Magaz

PART ONE: The First Photo of a Black Hole

U.S. COVID-19 cases are no longer falling in the U.S., as shown below from   The New York Times this morning.   Has to do with this Delta variant from India, which is more contagious and dangerous.   However, the vaccines are working, for most of the new cases are of the unvaccinated, and the few vaccinated who have been infected now don't die. Other news of the day: A new vaccine is coming, Novavax.  It has been tested to be 90% efficient. After a 12-year run, Benjamin Netanyahu is no longer Prime Minister.  He was replaced by Naftali Bennett (the bald guy). And the winner as Best in Show at the Westminster Dog Show was Wasabi, a Pekingese: It was 40 years ago that Harrison Ford made his debut ( with Karen Allen ) as Indiana Jones in  Raiders of the Lost Ark  ( Rotten Tomatoes 95/96 ), by Steven Spielberg and George Lukas.  Won five Oscars.  There were four films, ending with  Kingdom of the Crystal Skull  ( RT 78/53 ) in 2008.  Oh, a  #5 is coming in 2022 . Good segue into the
