STATE OF THIRD PARTY CANDIDATES FOR THE 2024 PRESIDENCY?

The USA has had 46 presidents.  Presidents Day was first established in 1879 as Washington's Birthday.   Back then there were only three other federal bank holidays:  Christmas, New Year's, Independence. So February 22 was added as the fourth. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, 292 years ago.   Well, not quite, for we were then on the Julian calendar, and he came on February 11.   The Gregorian calendar--to more accurately mark the solar year--was adopted in 1752, adding 11 days. I looked back to 2022 and all the way up to 2034, and  none of these Mondays were and will be on February 22 .   With all that history, the  federal government still calls this day Washington's Birthday . Congress passed the  Uniform Monday Holiday Act  in 1968, which officially took effect in 1971, shifting the fixed date of February 22 to the third Monday of February.   Lincoln's Birthday had been celebrated by some states on February 12, so they just combined the two presidents

THE WORLD IS DOING OKAY TODAY

First, can't help but start the week with another Lukovich cartoon: Also, too,  David Brooks of the  New York Times  this week had an op-ed about Donald Trump. The world is saved in tiny steps over time, and  Anthony Blinken did personally meet with President Xi Jinping . Then, of course, today is Juneteenth, celebrated as a public holiday by more than half of our states, but not Hawaii.  We have too many days off as it is, and June 19 is too close to June 11, King Kamehameha the First Day.  While there is no slavery today in the country, Blacks do earn far less than Whites.  From the  New York Times  this morning. And for Republicans who are worried about how hourly wages are increasing too rapidly, the reality is that, accounting for inflation, minimum wages are actually lower than in 1978.  For those who can't subtract, that was 45 years ago.  Also from  TNYT . I'm doing fine, too.  Returned from Las Vegas 9 days ago, and when I first weighed myself at home 4 days ago,

ON THE MATTER OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Federal holidays, plus  every fourth year, Janua

HURRICANES AND CYCLONES

I'll start today with the latest news of the day. About that Fox-Dominion trial that was supposed to start today.  Now we know why there was a one day delay.   THE DEFAMATION SUIT WAS SETTLED WITH FOX PAYING $787.5 MILLION TO DOMINION .  They had asked for $1.6 billion. The award amount is insignificant.  The end result is monumental. Democracy has been preserved. The Big Lie has been exposed. The Judiciary efforts to nail Trump for the January attack on the Capitol has been reinforced. The demise of the Republican Party has gained momentum. Hardcore Trumpers will not be much affected.  More Republicans will become Independent, and more Independents will now vote for Democrats. Democrats will regain control of both Houses of Congress on 8 November 2024 and the White House will remain with a Democrat on 5 November 2026. Fox News will continue, but who can trust them anymore? Today, April 18, is the last day to file your annual Federal Tax Form.  Why was it not April 15?  The 15th
