Summary:  All increased in new deaths yesterday from this past Friday.

Jeopardy! was created by Merv Griffin in 1964, hosted by Art Fleming.
  • Actually, it was Griffin's wife at that time, Julann, who came up with the idea.  They together wrote the theme song (click on that for a ten hour version).  It's a bit more complicated than that, for there are several branches.
  • The syndicated version premiered in 1984 with  Alex Trebek as host.  His final appearance was on 8January2021.
  • In addition to the production crew and staff, since 2012 Jeopardy! has employed nine writers and five researchers.  Five episodes are taped each day for two days every other week.
  • More than 8000 episodes have aired, winning a record 39 Daytime Emmy Awards.  The concept is now used worldwide.
  • Read Wikipedia to know about the details of the show.
For almost 40 years the daily champion was retired after five consecutive victories.  That changed in 2003, leading the following year to Ken Jennings, the current host, putting together a 74-game winning streak, netting $2.52 million dollars, or $33,636/episode.

Also won more than a million in special tournaments.  He is the highest-earning contestant in the history of American game shows with $5,223,414, and says he spent his winnings on the three T's:  taxes, tithing (10% to the Mormon Church) and widescreen TV.

James Holzhauer came with a background as a professional sports gambler.  Over a 32-game streak in 2019 he earned $2,462,216 using a strategy of betting nearly everything he had in Final Jeopardy.  He intimidated his competitors

Had a best one-day earning of $131,127.  His total game show earnings are now up to a bit more than $3 million.  In addition to whatever he does today, he contributes to The Atlantic's sports coverage and serves as the sports betting columnist for the New York Post.

In 2021 Matt Amodio had a 38 game winning streak, netting $1,518,601.  If Amy Schneider wins today and tomorrow, she will tie Amodio.

Brad Rutter has won $5,138,436 in game shows.  Had to retire from Jeopardy! after five wins in 2000, but never lost to a human through 17 matches in five tournaments, when he ended up third to Jennings.  Watson beat them both.

Watson?  Yes, IBM had an English computer  by that name for founder Thomas Watson, and a math guy, Deep Blue, who in 1996 almost beat world chess champ Garry Kasporov, but lost 4-2.  However, the following year, after some re-programming, Deep Blue won 3.5 to 2.5.  Kasparov asked for a re-match, but Deep Blue declined.  So Kasparov went on to continue being the world chess champion until 2000.

It was more than a decade ago when Watson took on Jennings and Rutter for $1 million.  Over three episodes Watson won $77,147 to $24,000 for Jennings and $21,600 for Rutter.  Watson later went into healthcare for cancer therapies.  Hopes to become a doctor someday, plus become a smart business computer.

What is the next Jeopardy! extravaganza?  No date yet, but certainly Matt Amodio and Amy Schneider will be among the competitors in the upcoming annual championship match.  Also, Dr. Sam Buttrey of the Naval Postgraduate School, for he last month prevailed at the Professors Tournament.  So will the winner of the February 8-22  Jeopardy? National College Championship.

I've had two recent endings with eggs, so make this a third:

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicious and troublesome.  This strain has also been spreading in

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for several months.  This is caused by stress more than anythi

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These are held every five years, and there have only been
