IS THE USA THE GREATEST COUNTRY....EVER?

I asked Google AI, is the USA the greatest country ever?

Whether the United States is the "preeminent" (greatest or most dominant) country in history is highly debated and depends on the metrics you use. Its massive economic output, military strength, and cultural footprint are unmatched today, though assessing the "greatest ever" often varies by the benchmarks applied . [1]
Arguments for US Preeminence:
  • Economic Power: The U.S. possesses the world's largest economy and leads global venture capital and capital market investment depth . [1, 2]
  • Innovation & Technology: The nation is a historical incubator for modern industries and technologies . For instance, it leads global foundations in Artificial Intelligence and development compute power . [1, 2]
  • Global Influence: Unparalleled military capabilities and cultural exports (films, music, software) provide the U.S. with a level of global soft power rarely seen in history.

Historically, are we today more dominant than were the Romans, British and Mongols?  Relative to the rest of the world in those days, debatable.  No doubt today just our nuclear capability would overwhelm those civilizations.

Using humanitarian metrics like foreign aid spending per capita, healthcare access and quality of life rankings, probably not.  I personally feel comfortable and secure enough at 15 Craigside to, however, believe that I am a citizen of the best nation there ever has been.

Yet, this article written for Time magazine by Robert Homats brings up some fundamental issues.  He begins with:

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, many of us seem to have forgotten a primary reason for America’s great success. In 250 years, our country became the world’s political, economic, and technological leader and the preeminent military, democratic, and moral force. This collective amnesia comes at a time of rising global competition, burgeoning multipolarity, and declining respect for our country in many parts of the world.

This competition we face today was on full display during the reception for President Donald Trump's May State Visit to Beijing, China's remarkable infrastructure and architectural achievements televised for the world to see, and broad reporting of China's dramatic technological advances (from human-like robots, to EVs, to solar panels, to widespread use of AI) revived a recurring multi-year debate among international observers and some Americans as well: is America in decline while is China on the rise? Numerous Chinese leaders reinforced this narrative.

Further...

....as several surveys have consistently indicated, optimism about our country's outlook has undeniably weakened. Stridently polarized and partisan American political discourse, attacks on our educational system and advanced research programs, major fragmentation in our alliances, a decline in confidence in government institutions over the years, the undermining of efforts to narrow socio-economic inequity, frequent federal shutdowns, mushrooming national debt, and a deteriorating sense of community all feed into a negative perception of America's future.

I've said this a couple of times already this week, but to repeat, here are highlights worthy of your time for the 250th celebrations.

Major events headlining today's Semiquincentennial celebration include:
  • Washington, D.C. (Salute to America 250): Features the "Great American State Fair" on the National Mall, multiple aircraft flyovers by the military, and a major evening speech by President Trump at 9:45PM. [1, 2]
  • Philadelphia, PA (Time Capsule Burial):
As the epicenter of American independence, Philadelphia is hosting extensive Wawa Welcome America festivities culminating in a time capsule dedication at Independence Hall that contains items from all 50 states.
[1, 2 And if you were wondering, WAWA is the name of a convenience store that is the major sponsor.
  • Nashville, TN (Let Freedom Sing!): Music City is hosting a massive live broadcast bash featuring concerts by acts like Boyz II Men and The All-American Rejects, followed by the city's largest-ever fireworks and drone show. [1, 2]
  • New York, NY (Sail250 and Macy's):
Features the largest maritime gathering in American history with tall ships in the harbor, as well as ABC's 24-hour "Disney Celebrates America" broadcast.
    [1, 2]
  • National Broadcasts: If you are watching from home, you can tune into cross-platform networks like ABC, Hulu, and Disney+ to view the "Disney Celebrates America" special or view the West Lawn events on "A Capitol Fourth". [1]

About the FIFA World Cup:

  • Today, Morocco beat Canada, 3-0, knocking out one of hosts.  Miracles are difficult to attain.
  • France is heavily favorite to dispatch Paraguay in a match that is going on as I post this article.
  • Tomorrow, Sunday, July 5.
    • Brazil vs Norway, 4PM EDT, odds, Brazil -123 or 55% favorite to win
    • Mexico vs England, 8PM EDT, odds, England slightly favored

As expected, the 2026 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Champs are again Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo.  Maybe the most nauseating ESPN annual event.

And, yes, they were wed yesterday.

HOW TO WATCH NETFLIX SHOWS

But first, maybe  President Donald Trump's 20-point Gaza Peace Plan is showing some progress .   No one expects the Hamas to accept all of them, but they did agree to release all captives and the act of handing over administration to Palestinian technocrats. So far, in the Gaza Strip, 66,288 have been killed and 169,165 wounded.   On 7October2023, almost two years ago, 1139 were killed in the initial Hamas-led attack. About my topic of the day, I've long been lamenting the overflow of watchable films and series available on Netflix and Prime.  Why expand into the plethora of other streaming options when I can't keep up with what I have, which costs me around $30/month.  And, of course, why venture out to a movie theater to end up watching a film that will cost me around that amount of money, when you add the popcorn, drink, gasoline cost, time it takes to get there and back, and the risk of a car accident or worse.  Oh, also getting infected with ...
