PRIDE OF AMERICA

15 Craigside Place is 2.5 miles up the hill from the Pier 2 terminal, where we will board the Pride of America this afternoon, and return to Honolulu in a week.  You might wonder, why again?  Yes, we took this cruise a year ago, and was nothing much.  I guess we like cruises to enhance the joy of life.  In addition, for this ship, we don't need to take lengthy plane rides and pay huge sums for any hotel stay.

The Pride of America is 18 years old  and 922 feet long, with a passenger capacity of 2630 plus 927 crew members.  It was refurbished in 2021.  There are 14 decks with 1096 cabins.
The ship will dock at Kahului on Maui.  Lahaina is 25 miles away.  This will be the first cruise ship allowed into this island since that wildfire devastated that Lahaina on August 8.  This a photo of the Pride of America berthed in Kahului when we last visited.
Interestingly enough, there was a rather serious wildfire when were last there.  A photo from our cabin.
What do we plan to do when we get to Maui?  Don't know.  Return to see what, if anything.

Adios Margaritaville, the Hawaii version.  Jimmy Buffet passed away at the age of 76.

ON THE MATTER OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Fede...

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

NETFLIX vs DISNEY+ vs AMAZON PRIME

This is now   Day 39 of the government shutdown .  I earlier this week predicted that this should all be over by yesterday.  Well, the Senate is having a rare Saturday session, and the 15th vote on advancing the House-passed continuing resolution could be advanced later in the day,  But Senators are not close to reaching an final agreement. Over the past decade, my streaming was "limited" to Netflix and Amazon Prime.  15 Craigside also has Showtime, but recently made available, for FREE, Disney streaming services:  Hulu, HBO Max and ESPN+, my posting yesterday.  So today I compare the Disney+ family with Netflix and Prime. I now pay for Netflix, something I've been doing for more than 15 years.  Same for Amazon Prime.  I calculate that I've spent around $5000 during this period. Amazon Prime? I buy things through Amazon, and the TV part comes with it. So I'll continue. Netflix? I am charged $18/month. Should I continue, now that I have all th...
