AS THE WORLD TURNS

The New York Times summarized where we are in controlling global warming:

Before 2015, the world was expected to warm by about four degrees Celsius by 2100. Today, the world is on track for three degrees Celsius. And if the world’s leaders meet their current commitments, the planet would warm by around two degrees Celsius.

That is not enough to declare victory. The standard goal world leaders have embraced to avoid the worst consequences of climate change is to keep warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2100. Unfortunately, that does look increasingly unreachable, experts said.

As the World Turns (watch the evolution of the opening, and shifting commercials--did you know that Lux Soap was taken off the shelves in the 1990's, but you can buy it again today) is an American television soap opera that played from 1956 to 2010, placing fourth to General HospitalGuiding Light and Days of Our Lives in length.  Won 43 daytime Emmys.  However, the posting today has nothing to do with ATWT.

Well it does in a thematic sense.  Irma Phillips, the person who came up with that title said, As the world turns, we know the bleakness of winter, the promise of spring, the fullness of summer and the harvest of autumn–the cycle of life is complete.

In other words, things happen, but we keep coming back to the same spot.  The names and circumstances might change, but like the seasons, come and go, with life rolling along like we've seen it before.

For example, FOX News hired Caitlyn Jenner, while MSNBC will bring on board Jen Psakis.  You ask, who is Jenner?

  • She (he) was born William Jenner in 1949, and won a Decathlon Gold Medal in the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics.  His photo was on the Wheaties breakfast cereal box.
  • Married three times, with his 1981 third, Kris Kardashian, bearing two children.  Kris already had four, the group that later starred in Keeping Up with the Kardashians.  They were married for 22 years and divorced in 2013.  You need a scorecard just to keep up with who is who in this clan.
  • Then in 2015 he came out as a trans-woman, which is a transgender person who has transitioned from a male to female.  She (he) did say she was never attracted to men.  Underwent cosmetic surgery, which was completed in 2017.  No confirming details.
  • Jenner knew Donald Trump, but assured Senator Ted Cruz that nobody got molested, and endorsed Cruz for his 2016 presidential run.  Remained reasonably okay with Trump, but in 2018 revoked her support because of his gender rights views.
About Jen Psakis:
  • Not as exciting a life as Jenner.
  • Is 43 years old.
  • Worked for CNN from 2017 to 2020.
  • Was press secretary for President Barack Obama's 2012 reelection campaign, and went on to become a spokesperson for the Department of State.
  • Became press secretary for President Joe Biden in 2020.
  • Tested positive for COVID-19 in 2021, and again in 2022.  This might have been the most newsworthy series of events in her life.
  • Is married to Greg Mecher and they have two children.
  • I regularly watched the performances of all Donald Trump's press secretaries:  Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Kayleigh McEnany and Stephanie Grisham.
    • Spicer's reign was short, but Melissa McCarthy's Saturday Night Live spoofs of him were about as good as TV gets.
    • I did too much view Trump's press travails, for those psycho/nut/idiotic/etc performances were frightfully provoking, and it was a kick to see what his press secretaries would in afterthought say.
  • I don't think I have watched any of Jen Psaki's press conferences for at least a year.  News today is mostly boring, repetitive and not threatening enough.
You knew that Saturday Night Live would not let past Will Smith's slap of Chris Rock.  Last night they only touched on it in the open, but spent most of Weekend Update on this incident.   I didn't realize that Colin Jost, shown to the left, was married to Scarlett Johansson.  Rolling Stone mag had a detailed summary.

Fleetwood Mac's World Turning.  Here, a real view of our Earth turning.  And another.  With one that runs for an hour and shows lights.  Finally, rotating Earth with space ambience soothing music for 6 hours of deep sleeping.  Of course, you can maximize your experience by switching to the full screen option, and take a nap.

Yesterday I alerted you to a fabulous home that went on sale today.  The Star Advertiser agreed with me, for it was selected as the Home of the Week!

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicious and troublesome.  This strain has also been spreading in

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for several months.  This is caused by stress more than anythi

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These are held every five years, and there have only been
