MY LIFE: Part 3b

About Donald Trump and the Iran War, not exactly a deal, but an agreement to spend the next 60 days in ceasefire, while negotiators argue about possible long-term peace, nuclear matters, money, Strait of Hormuz and so forth.

  • As I mentioned yesterday, there will be a signing of the memorandum of agreement on Friday in Geneva by Veep JD Vance and Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
    • This event is being hosted by Pakistan, with key mediators like Qatar in attendance.
    • Israel will not sign and is therefore not bound by the terms of the MoA.  Thus, the war in Lebanon will be a particularly sensitive matter through the upcoming talks.
  • The Strait of Hormuz will not be completely open from Friday.
    • It will take a month or so for mine clearing operations.
    • Details on shipping insurance will need to be worked out.
    • Will there be a toll?  Trump insists no, but Iran disagrees.
  • Here is a video.
  • This is from where comes Evian Water, since 1826.
  • The host in 2027 will be President Donald Trump.

About that American flag blue 2,030 foot long and 167 feet wide Reflecting Pool between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. photos tell the story.

This was supposed to be the result of the $14.2 million renovation.
Instead, algae got in the way, another insult to Trump, and this is what the Reflecting Pool looks like today.

The Trump administration blamed former President Barack Obama.  Turns out that the darker blue-painted bottom now absorbs more heat, and maintaining a blue color in hot summer months could be a long term problem.  Will scientists be able to kill the algae to restore a beautiful blue color by the Fourth of July?

From NBC:

All four of Monday’s matches ended in ties. In the surprise result of the tournament so far, reigning European champions Spain drew 0-0 with debutants Cape Verde; a lackluster Belgium were held to a 1-1 tie with Egypt, the same scoreline as Saudi Arabia-Uruguay. See highlights from yesterday.

Not mentioned above was the Iran vs New Zealand tie.  About Cape Verde:

  • Also known as Cabo Verde.
  • Is a nation consisting of ten volcanic islands off West Africa, with a combined land area of 1557 square miles.  The relatively small Big Island of Hawaii is 4,033 square miles large.
  • Had a population of 491,233 in 2021.  The population of Oahu is double that of Cape Verde.
  • GDP/capita of almost $10,000.  Hawaii is around $80,000/capita.
  • Gained independence from Portugal in 1975.
  • This is their first World Cup.
  • Particularly noteworthy was Cape Verde's 40-year old goalkeeper, Vozinha.
    • Was born in Cape Verde by the name Josimar Jose Evora Dias.
    • Raised by grandparents who nicknamed him Vozinha, meaning voice.
    • Has played professionally for clubs in Angola, Moldova, Slovakia and Portugal.
  • Games today:

  • Group J: Austria vs. Jordan — 6:00 p.m. HST
  • I'm tempted to end my posting today, for there is enough stuff above, and maybe tomorrow go into Part 3b continuing my life in retirement, but I'll just spend time on one small thing, the books I wrote after I returned from my Indian Ocean/Norway trip of Part 3a.

    • First, the three books I'm proud of, published before I retired.
      • The yellow one to the left was not me as author, but a real textbook on renewable energy put together one semester by one of my classes in Technology & Society.  The Department of Education adopted it for their high school classes because in the 1970s this was one of the first of its kind.
      • I was one of the three co-authors for the middle one published just before I began working for Senator Spark Matsunaga in DC.
      • I am credited with Andrew Trenka as a co-author for the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion textbook requested by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, but this too was mostly actually written by our staff at the Pacific International Center for High Technology Research.
    • So anyway, six years after doing almost nothing during my early retirement, I decided to bring together all I knew from nearly a quarter century of effort as a University of Hawaii faculty member in engineering on geothermal energy (my first project in 1973), marine algae raceway project in the mid-1970s and assorted green energy topics that captured my interest as a researcher for the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, which I helped form in 1974 after the First Energy Crisis in October of 1973.  The result was SIMPLE SOLUTIONS for Planet Earth in August of 2007.

    • I then thought, why don't I write a book on what I don't know.  The result was SIMPLE SOLUTIONS for Humanity in February of 2008.
      • From Amazon.com:
Book 1 (SIMPLE SOLUTIONS for Planet Earth) dealt with energy and the environment. SIMPLE SOLUTIONS for Humanity provides ultimate answers for our society and beyond. Ever wonder if there could ever be a way to end crime and war forever, or the prospects for immortality, or a better educational system, or the reality of extraterrestrial intelligence, or the future of religion? If all the above can be satisfactorily resolved, then, just in case there is no afterlife, where is the best place to live on Earth today? Simple solutions, of course, are hardly that. How to end crime? What about three strikes and you're dead! Sure this should work, but it's not morally rational. The solution to war is incredibly simple. Just read the book and find out how. Scientists are getting very close to determining a way to disarm our aging gene. When will this happen? Our educational system is flawed. Be prepared to be shocked by the Stanford Marshmallow Study. Then find out that our terrible student scores relative to the developed world might not be worth all the anguish. The USA will prevail because of our superiority in.... Could the solution for world peace or curing cancer be streaming in from space? The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence could someday soon detect what would be the most monumental discovery since the invention of God. How can religion overcome the immorality of purporting to promise an afterlife WITHOUT ANY PROOF? A Golden Evolution is suggested. Are you one of those who has largely wasted your life looking out only for yourself, family and friends? Could there be a higher calling? You, too, can make a positive difference. Rainbow Vision is explained to equip you with the tools to help save Planet Earth and Humanity.

    • During this period, I was asked by The Huffington Post, still in its infancy, to help out with a few articles.
    • My third retirement book was SIMPLE SOLUTION ESSAYS in September of 2010.
      • This was a compilation of around 70 or so of my articles for the Huffington Post.  I ended up writing a few more than a hundred of them and "retired" a long time ago.
      • My wife had died in 2009, and I wanted to give a gold tree sapling and a new book for her celebration of life party in Hilo.
      • Here is the back cover page dedicating this book to her.
      • Read my posting of 11May2011.

    HOW TO WATCH NETFLIX SHOWS

But first, maybe  President Donald Trump's 20-point Gaza Peace Plan is showing some progress .   No one expects the Hamas to accept all of them, but they did agree to release all captives and the act of handing over administration to Palestinian technocrats. So far, in the Gaza Strip, 66,288 have been killed and 169,165 wounded.   On 7October2023, almost two years ago, 1139 were killed in the initial Hamas-led attack. About my topic of the day, I've long been lamenting the overflow of watchable films and series available on Netflix and Prime.  Why expand into the plethora of other streaming options when I can't keep up with what I have, which costs me around $30/month.  And, of course, why venture out to a movie theater to end up watching a film that will cost me around that amount of money, when you add the popcorn, drink, gasoline cost, time it takes to get there and back, and the risk of a car accident or worse.  Oh, also getting infected with ...

ON THE MATTER OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Fede...
