THE WORLD TODAY

I'll begin this week with a quick summary of what is happening in the U.S. and World.

  • The U.S. Supreme Court went into session today.  Don't expect much this year.  How to survive President Trump will be their primary goal.
  • The Nobel Prize announcements have begun.
    • Six of them are awarded in physics, chemistry, physiology/medicine, literature, peace and economics.
    • Established by the will of Swedish inventor (dynamiteAlfred Nobel since 1901.  The award in economics was added in 1969.
    • Swedish organizations select the winners in all categories, except for peace, which comes from Norway.  Why?  No one knows for sure, except that this was specified in Nobel's will.
    • Today, U.S. scientists Mary Rundow (64) and Fred Ramsdell (64), and Japan's Shimon Sakaguchi (74), were named recipients of the prize for medicine.  Their work relates to how we keep our immune system under control.  They each get $400,000, but more importantly, they attain that ultimate level of respect and recognition.
    • Tomorrow, physics, then chemistry on Wednesday, literature on Thursday, and peace plus economics on Friday.
    • The award ceremony will occur on December 10, the anniversary of of Nobel's death.  He died at the age of 63 in 1896.
  • This is Day 6 of the Federal government shutdown.  Could end today, or next month, or by the end of the year.  Both parties are posturing to gain any advantage in the November 2026 midterm elections.  I worry if there even will be one.  Donald Trump was asked about his thoughts on this future.

According to the New York Times this morning:

Japan’s currency plummeted and its stock market rallied after the governing party unexpectedly chose a pro-stimulus conservative hard-liner, Sanae Takaichi, as leader.

Plummeted?  Remember, the higher the dollar vs yen rate, the better for American travelers in Japan.  The highest this rate has been over the past 90 days is 150.8, and lowest at 146.1.  Today, this is at 150.3.  Plummeted?

About the Major League Baseball Division Series:

  • Detroit and Seattle are tied at 1-1, and continue play tomorrow in Detroit, 4:08 PM EDT on FS1.
  • Toronto is embarrassing the New York Yankees 2-0, and play continues tomorrow in New York, 8:08 PM EDT on FS1.
  • Los Angeles Dodgers are 1-0 against Philadelphia, and their next game is tonight at 6:08 PM EDT on TBS.  Game 3 will be at on Wednesday in Los Angeles, 9:08 PM EDT on TBS.
  • Milwaukee is 1-0 against the Chicago Cubs, and their next game is tonight at 9:08 PM EDT on TBS.  Game 3 will be in Chicago, 5:08PM EDT, Wednesday on TBS.

Did you know yesterday was World Teachers' Day?

A few more apt cartoons.

HOW TO WATCH NETFLIX SHOWS

But first, maybe  President Donald Trump's 20-point Gaza Peace Plan is showing some progress .   No one expects the Hamas to accept all of them, but they did agree to release all captives and the act of handing over administration to Palestinian technocrats. So far, in the Gaza Strip, 66,288 have been killed and 169,165 wounded.   On 7October2023, almost two years ago, 1139 were killed in the initial Hamas-led attack. About my topic of the day, I've long been lamenting the overflow of watchable films and series available on Netflix and Prime.  Why expand into the plethora of other streaming options when I can't keep up with what I have, which costs me around $30/month.  And, of course, why venture out to a movie theater to end up watching a film that will cost me around that amount of money, when you add the popcorn, drink, gasoline cost, time it takes to get there and back, and the risk of a car accident or worse.  Oh, also getting infected with ...
