For nostalgia Tuesday, I'm going back 15 years to 7October2020.  Why?  Mostly because I woke up this morning and watched Debby Boone singing You Light Up My Life, which ranked #92 in my Top 100 list. More specifically, because on the screen was something about her mother-in-law Rosemary Clooney.  I did not not know they were related.  That photo to the left is of Debby with her husband Gabriel Ferrrer and Rosemary.

About 7October2010, from Wikipedia:

  • A lot of deaths in the Middle East.
  • Peruvian-Spanish writer Mario Vargas Llosa wins Nobel Prize in Literature.
  • A lost Vivaldi flute concerto, Il Gran Mogol, is found in Edinburgh.
    • The other three pieces of the quartet remain lost.
    • Written in the late 1720s or early 1730s.
    • How did it get to Scotland?
    • Listen to Il Gran Mogol.
    • I love Baroque music, a genre created between 1600 and 1750 in Europe.  Prominent composers include Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, with The Four Seasons by Vivaldi way up there in my list of favorites.
  • The United States dollar reaches a 15-year low against the Japanese yen and depreciates against a range of other currencies due to concerns about further quantitative easing by the United States Federal Reserve.  82.6 Yen to the Dollar.  Or, if you traveled in Japan in the Fall of 2010, you would pay almost twice as much as you would today.  Japan had nearly 9 million foreign visitors in 2010, but could reach 48 million this year.  We'll be there next month.
  • The U.S. conducted a helicopter strike on Pakistan, and apologized.
  • South African Archbishop Desmond retired from public life at the age of 79.
  • Or, in summary, nothing much happened on 7October2010.
However, in my search for more on the Debby/Rosemary matter, I found an Oprah.com page of 19October2010, which included the following info:
  • Debby Boone--where is she now?
    • In 1977, at the age of 21, she sang the song of the 1970s, You Light Up My Life.  Song spent 10 weeks at #1, and earned her a Best New Artist Grammy award.
    • I loved that song, but many others didn't.  I had a posting on 12November2017 entitled WHAT IS THE WORST SONG EVER?
  • Here with father Pat.
  • She later spent some time on Broadway, then found success in Christian music.  In her upbringing, the family went to church 3 times/week.
  • Said Oprah, about where Debby, 33 years later, still holds the record for most weeks at #1 by a first-time primary female artist.
  • She is a mother of four, and has been married for 31 years to Gabriel Ferrer, son of Oscar-winning actor Jose Ferrer and Rosemary Clooney.  Debby and Gabriel remain married.
  • To honor her mother-in-law, Debby recorded Rosemary's songs on an album called Reflections of Rosemary.
  • Debby's father Pat, also had a few hits.  I have a story about "our" relationship, for this link started my quest for Stanford.
    • I saw Pat Boone on TV wearing white bucks.
  • I noticed that my older brother, when he left for the University of Michigan, had left behind his white wedding shoes, which he had worn only once.
  • So the next day after seeing Pat Boone, wore them.
  • I was a huge hit at school.  No one ever at McKinley High School ever wore these before.  Pat and I, both Pats, started a trend.
  • If I had to pick one most likely initial spark that inspired me to think about Stanford University as a possible future for me, this was it.
In 2025, Susan Boyle has made a strong comeback after a stroke in 2022, returning to the recording studio and social media to share her recovery and announce new projects.
By early 2025, she had regained approximately 90% of her voice after extensive rehabilitation and was actively sharing updates from her work, such as attending award shows and playing tennis at Wimbledon.
In late 2024 and 2025, Jackie Evancho is still actively pursuing her music career, releasing an EP and continuing to perform and advocate for mental health awareness.
A significant development in 2025 is her continuing to establish herself as a mature artist, exploring different musical styles such as the "80s new wave aesthetic" of her 2024 EP Solar.
While she's also been open about past health struggles, including anorexia and a 2021 back injury from a car accident, the 2025 search results focus on her present-day artistic growth and journey of self-discovery.

There are three noteworthy ocean storms, but they seem all headed away from populated areas.  In the Atlantic is Hurricane Jerry, expected to skirt north of Guadalupe, become a Category 2 by Thursday, seemingly headed for the Eastern Seaboard.  However, models show Jerry making a right turn into the mid-Atlantic.

In the Eastern Pacific  is Hurricane Priscilla at 110 MPH, but should weaken into a tropical storm to clip Bahia Tortugas of Baja California on Thursday and further east on Friday.
In the Western Pacific is Typhoon Halong at 140 MPH, now pointing towards Tokyo.  However, like most of these typhoons approaching Japan this year, there will be a right turn away from Japan.

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

THE TRUMP ENERGY PROGRAM

From  Time  magazine, I begin with a slew of Trump topics.  You can read the details. The unpopular Big Beautiful Bill is now in the House . The only truly effective anti-Trump person:  Elon Musk. The Trump Gaza ceasefire proposal . The July 4th Free American Anti-Trump Protest planned across the USA . This site began as a renewable energy and environment blog, and has evolved to just about any subject.  I try to keep Wednesdays for sci-tech, with perhaps a monthly focus on energy.  More recently, I've drawn from the  Energy Matters  info sent to me by the American Energy Society.  I'm inserting direct quotes this time to eliminate my predilections for more credibility. This service starts with some broad topics. - Fossil fuels: Helium is locked in a supply crunch, and prices are surging. - Renewables: Congress will probably pass new renewable fuel standards for 2026 and 2027. - Policy: President Trump is now focused on Califor...

OSAKA EXPO: Day One

Well, the day finally came for us to go to the Osaka Expo.  We were told ahead of time that the long walks would be fearful, giant lines will need to be tolerated just to get into the Expo, with those ocean breezes, it would really be cold, and so forth. Maybe it was pure luck, but we avoided all the above warnings  We had a grand day, and are looking forward to Sunday, our second day at the Expo.  So come along for an enjoyable ride. Our hotel is adjacent to the Tennoji Station, a very large one with several lines.  We upgraded our Suica card and caught the Misosuji red line towards Umeda. Transferred to the Chuo green line at the Hommachi Station.  This Osaka Metro train took us to the Yumeshima Station at the Expo site.   It was a very large mob leaving the train and heading to the entrance. Took only a few minutes to get to the entrance.  This mob was multiplied by at least a factor of  ten of those already waiting to enter.  However...
