SAN DIEGO TO PASO ROBLES

But first, those two wars.

  • This is day 1336 of the Russia-Ukraine War.
    • Still ongoing.
    • When Trump met with Zelenskyy last week, he pressed Ukraine to give up territory to Russia.
    • Trump talked to Putin for two hours on the phone, and they will meet in Budapest this week.
The drive from San Diego to Los Angeles on Interstate 5 (120 miles) usually takes 2 hours and 25 minutes.  Then, Los Angeles on I-5 N to CA-46W to Paso Robles (205 miles) about 3 hours and 15 minutes.  Of course, these are in ideal conditions with no stops.

We were picked up by Linda in her Lexus at 10AM.
This is a self-driving car.  Kind of scary, actually.
We picked up a fourth person, Joanne, and kept changing interstates and highways for the roads here and there were clogged.  Dropped by a MacDonald's along the way.  Not much to see on the drive, but here is an oilfield just outside of Bakersfield.
Got into Paso Robles just before 5PM.
Nice hotel.  The view from our room.
Noticed some fruits on that tree close to our hotel.  Apples?
El Paso de Robles (pass of the oaks), or Paso Robles, is located on the Salinas Rivers, about 30 miles north of San Luis Obispo.
  • Known for hot springs, wineries and production of olive oil and almonds.
  • A major crossroad today, about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
  • Population of 30,900.  Was 31,484 in 2020.
  • History.
    • Native Americans Salinan lived in the area thousands of years before the mission era.
    • As far back as 1795 was California's oldest watering place.
    • James and Daniel Blackburn in 1857 purchased a Mexican land grant, with partner Drury James, uncle of outlaw Jesse James.
    • Was a rest stop for travelers of the el Camino Real trail.
    • Known for mineral hotsprings.
    • Settlers established cattle ranches, dairy farms, apply/almond orchids and vineyards.
    • First El Paso de Robles Hotel came in 1864 featuring hot mineral springs bath houses.
    • Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1886.
    • Incorporated as a city in 1889.
    • The new El Paso de Robles Hotel opened in 1891.  Staying here over time were Jack Dempsey, President Theodore Roosevelt Douglas Fairbanks, Boris Karloff, Bob Hope, Clark Gable and the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox baseball teams when they had a spring training home here.  Fire destroyed the hotel in 1940, and third one was called the Paso Robles Inn.
    • James Dean died on the road just east of this city in 1955.
    • Paso Robles began to flourish just after my last pass through in 1962.
  • Has long been a site of wine grapes.
    • First introduced in 1796 by Spanish conquistadors, like Francisco Cortex, and Franciscan missionaries.
    • Commercial winemaking was introduced in 1882 as York Mountain Winery, now Epoch Winery.
    • Pianist Ignace Paderewski lived here around 1915, purchased 2000 acres and planted Petite Sirah and Zinfandel.  Following prohibition, his wine was made at York Mountain Winery.
    • The early 1920s saw a flurry of activity rom Martinelli, Busi, Vosti, Steinbeck and Bianchi Winery vineyards.
    • The next generation of wineries came in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
    • There are now 250 bonded wineries.
    • More on wines later.
  • There was a 6.6 moment magnitude earthquake in nearby San Simeon 2003.
  • Has an excellent climate for grapes and wines, with an unusually large day-night temperature swing of 50 F in the summer.
  • All-time high of 117 F on 13August1933, and again a few times, including on my one of my birthdays, 6September2020.
  • Record low of 0 F on 6January1913.
  • Annual rainfall of 14.71 inches.
  • Has an overall crime rate of 16.61, much lower than the national average of 33.37.
Our Paso Robles hotel is the Allegretto Vineyard Resort.
  • Allegretto describes a cheerful tempo of 112-120 beats/minute.
  • Covers 20 acres.
  • Surrounded by vineyards.
  • Has a private label.
  • Named #2 best wine country hotel by USA Today.

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Fede...

THE NEXT TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

There are 4 types of solar eclipse. Total  Partial  Annular  Hybrid  About the above graphic. On the left is a total solar eclipse. In middle is an annular solar eclipse. A hybrid eclipse appears as either a total or an annular eclipse depending on the observers location.  These only occur once in a decade. A partial eclipse is to the right. A total solar eclipse occurs about every 18 months.  However a specific location will see a total eclipse only once every 375 years.  So if you recently saw one, you'll need to travel to see another.   My wife was born on July 11.  She found out that there would be total eclipse over her Big Island on that day in 1991, so off we flew to Kailua-Kona and stayed at the King Kamehameha Hotel.  Turned out that if we had just watched from the hotel beach, we would have had the best view.  But we had a friend who lived high up on Mauna Loa, so off we went to join him.   But it was so clo...
