HAPPINESS

Continuing the weekend, first, the University of Hawaii volleyball team lost to UCLA in the championship game.  Look for UCLA to repeat next year.  Had a nachos and beer, a follow-up to Cinco de Mayo.
Had a Woodford Spire for the Kentucky Derby.
The story of the day had to do with Cory...and his horse, Cody's Wish, which was running a in pre-race.
Cody's Wish won.  Watch this story here. Heartwarming.
I had mentioned getting Kentucky Fried Chicken to eat with the Woodford Spire to watch the Kentucky Derby, but heck, 15 Craigside also had fried chicken.
What is the the most important matter in your life? Some might say family, others mention wealth, world peace, freedom, security, and hundreds of other notions.  Something called happiness appeals to me.  I am today very happy, and on the verge of Euphoria #4.  While on the recent Seabourn cruise I almost attained that state, but never quite reached it.

On this Sunday I can especially mention one other difference between 15 Craigside and the Seabourn Odyssey, or any cruise ship...spirituality.  15C is "owned" by the United Church of Christ, with our older sister, Arcadia, which has been around for more than half a century.  There is a definite undertone of religiousness.  Nothing overwhelming, but more services related to what churches do.  Cruises are very secular.

What is happiness?  An emotional state of joy, satisfaction, contentment and fulfillment.  Clearly, however, it varies from person to person.

The Proceedings of the National Academic of Sciences found that people who were happier live longer, although they focused on optimism as the key parameter.  The English Longitudinal Study of Aging got more specific.  Happier people don't just enjoy life more, they're like to live longer, too.  These people are 35% less likely to die in the next 5 years.  This last sentence means the world to me, for I think I only have 5 years left.

Aristotle made a distinction:

  • Hedonia:  is more personal and derives from pleasure.
  • Eudaimonia:  is derived from seeking virtue and meaning.
  • But psychologists today have suggested a third component that relates to engagement.

There is a World Happiness Report of the United Nations, using data from the Gallup World Poll.  Finland has been ranked the happiest country six times in a row.

Canada is at 7.0 and the USA 6.9.  Noticed that almost all those highly rated countries are too cold for me.  Russia scored 5.7, China 5.8, Ukraine 5.1 and India 4.0, Lebanon 2.4 and Afghanistan 1.9, the lowest. In and around Africa, Mauritius is  5.9 and Sierra Leone 3.1.

Ah...the happiest states are led by Hawaii at #1, Utah #2, Minnesota #3...with Arkansas next to the bottom...with West Virginia, by far, the lowest.  You'd never guess that North Dakota is #5 and South Dakota is #9.  California is #5.

Statistica has Hawaii as #1, Wyoming #2, Alaska #3, Montana #4 and Utah #5.  Wallace Hub shows Hawaii #1, Maryland #2, Minnesota #3, Utah #4 and New Jersey #5.  West Virginia is #50.  Here are 12 reasons why Hawaii is the Happiest State.

I've been to Finland.  Here were some thoughts.

  •  It is possible for your face to instantly go numb when you suddenly walk into a gust and the wind chill factor is minus 25C. If I were to live here for any length of time, I would purchase one of those helmets worn by luge competitors. The plastic covering your face and overall protection of your ears should work. Then, if you slip on an invisible layer of ice, there will be protection when your head hits the pavement.
  • I'll have fond memories of Helsinki, for it is here, after my fourth Olympic city (Seoul, Barcelona, Munich) of this trip, where it occurred to me that the only hope Hawaii has to overcome what some are predicting to be a terrible economic future, is to host Hawaii Sustainable Expo 2020: Visions for Blue Planet Earth. We need to transcend current attitudes and transform our thinking
    .
  • I went to Finland specifically to meet with educators on why their system was outstanding.  This was 13 years ago, and today, their education system is considered to be the best in the world.  Some reasons.
  • Emphasize equity over excellence.
  • No standardized testing system.
  • Children begin school at 7.
  • All teachers need to have at least a master's degree, and they are respected at least as well as doctors, corporate executives and other leading positions... and maybe more so.  In short, somehow they have orchestrated a society that attracts the best and brightest into teaching.  And they are paid no better than those in the USA.
  • Fosters cooperation over competition, teaching teamwork and collaboration.
  • Says a Finnish philosopher and psychology researcher, we don't...:
    • ...compare ourselves to our neighbors.
    • ...overlook the benefits of nature.
    • ...break the community circle of trust (lost wallets are returned).
What about why people in Hawaii are so happy.  From Business Insider:
  • Hawaiians have the longest average lifespan in America.
  • Ranked as the third safest city.
  • 90% graduate from high school and 29% from college.
  • 61% exercise frequently, second in the nation.
  • 59% eat fresh produce frequently.
  • Fresh fish is abundant.  Over 250 sushi restaurants in Honolulu alone.
  • 90% have health insurance.
  • High percentage of veterans.
  • Plethora of museums, monuments, zoos et.
  • 39% are Asian.  But there is a diverse heritage with festivals and cultural celebrations, and all are equal.
  • Beaches.  Kauai has 50 miles along 113 miles of coastline.  An they can be white, black, green or red.
  • Incredible nature, physical and psychological.
  • Laid-back lifestyle.

Someone sent this to me a long time ago, and has long been on my desktop.  Ideal moment to show it.

A final video that also has lingered on my desktop for a while...what keeps us healthy and happy.
Wait, what about happy music?  Here are the ten happiest classical pieces.  I use Mozart's #2 as the chimes for my doorbell.  My favorites?  Among them at this very moment:  Pet Shop Boys with Always On My Mind (why...don't know), Kokoni Sachi Ari (means Here is Happiness in Japanese, and Teddy Tanaka was a classmate at McKinley High School), Aizen Katsura (a 1939 song from the movie of the same name, this is the whole film), Ginza Kan Kan Musume (that was the original with Hideko Takamine, but I grew up with Hawaii's Jane Itai's version), Iz's Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World Medley.

Add Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk...but what makes me happiest is the video about old movie stars dancing to this song.  However, this might have been my happiest few minutes watching TV.

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicious and troublesome.  This strain has also been spreading in

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for several months.  This is caused by stress more than anythi

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These are held every five years, and there have only been
