NETFLIX and More

If you subscribe to Netflix and have any interest in boxing matches, you can watch, for FREE, the Canelo Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) vs Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) bout at 9 PM EDT.  The fight purse is $200 million.  The fight card will also feature:

  • Callum Walsh vs. Fernando Vargas Jr.

Rising Irish star Callum Walsh (14-0, 11 KOs) takes on undefeated Fernando Vargas Jr. (17-0, 15 KOs) in one of the night’s most anticipated matchups. With both fighters eager to make a statement on boxing’s biggest stage, this bout could steal the show before the main event.

  • Christian Mbilli vs. Lester Martinez

Current WBC interim world super middleweight belt holder Christian Mbilli (29-0, 24 KOs) faces knockout artist Lester Martinez (19-0, 16 KOs).

  • Undefeated prospect Mohammed Alakel (4-0) meets John Ornelas (5-2-1) in an undercard showdown in a 10-round lightweight match.

The program begins at 5:30 PM EDT with some early prelims.  This is the third showcase boxing event for Netlix:

  • November 2024:  Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson, which drew a worldwide audience of 108 million.
  • Summer of 2024:  Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano, third of their trilogy, which drew 6 million global viewers, the most-watched professional women's sporting event of 2025 in the U.S.

And in case you did not know, Amazon Prime now is where Thursday Night NFL football games can be seen.  Last night it was Commanders at Packers.  Next week, Dolphins at Bills, with pre-game starting at 7PM EDT, game at 8:15.

Of course, NCAA football will have a few games, with the best ones being (all EDT):

  • #6 Georgia at #15 Tennessee, 9:30AM, ABC, UGA -3.5, O/U 49.5
  • #18 South Florida at #5 Miami, 10:30 AM, CW Network, Mia -17.5, O/U 56.5
  • Florida at #3 LSU, 1:30 PM, ABC, LSU -7.5, O/U 48.5
  • #16 Texas A&M at #8 Notre Dame, 1:30 PM, NBC, ND -6.5, O/U 50.5

This South Florida team has already demolished Boise State, 34-7, and upset Florida, 18-16.  Miami by 17.5 points?  Hmmm......  If South Florida beats Miami, they will finish the regular season undefeated.

By the way, this is confusing, but the 2026 PGA season began this week with the Procore Championship at the Silverado Resort in Napa, California.  Winner gets 500 FedEx Cup points.  Normally, only second-rate players participate, but in the field is Scottie Scheffler.  Procore is an American construction management software company founded in 2002.

About Netflix:

  • From Time magazine:  Netflix in September 2025.
  • These begin today:  Beauty and the Beast, Maledictions, Ratu Ratu Queens: The Series, The Wrong Paris and You and Everything Else
  • Netflix Top Ten Shows, meaning series:

Amazon Prime Top Ten, with the #1 series being The Summer I Turned Pretty (there are 3 seasons) and #1 movie, Ice Road:  Vengeance.  Rotten Tomatoes for TSITP (76/63) and IRV (17/28, with Liam Neeson).

To close, I've now and then reported on the Stanford Alumni Wine Program.

  • Began in 1881, and I got my first annual order soon thereafter.
  • Every so often I stumble across an old one in my wine refrigerator.  Tried two 20-25 year old Chardonnay this year, and they were both not quite drinkable.
  • Two years ago, they had seven different wines, the most expensive being a 2019 Fisher Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley for $80/bottle.
  • Last year, for the first time, they rested.  No wines.
  • This year, only three types, with the Collector's Reserve 2022 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon from Chappellet, Napa Valley at $85/bottle.
  • Only ordered a few bottles this year, mostly because we have a trip planned for Paso Robles next month to taste their Petite Sirah.

If you live where there are Zippy's (Hawaii and Las Vegas), here is a new special.

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

ON THE MATTER OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Fede...

THE TRUMP ENERGY PROGRAM

From  Time  magazine, I begin with a slew of Trump topics.  You can read the details. The unpopular Big Beautiful Bill is now in the House . The only truly effective anti-Trump person:  Elon Musk. The Trump Gaza ceasefire proposal . The July 4th Free American Anti-Trump Protest planned across the USA . This site began as a renewable energy and environment blog, and has evolved to just about any subject.  I try to keep Wednesdays for sci-tech, with perhaps a monthly focus on energy.  More recently, I've drawn from the  Energy Matters  info sent to me by the American Energy Society.  I'm inserting direct quotes this time to eliminate my predilections for more credibility. This service starts with some broad topics. - Fossil fuels: Helium is locked in a supply crunch, and prices are surging. - Renewables: Congress will probably pass new renewable fuel standards for 2026 and 2027. - Policy: President Trump is now focused on Califor...
