MARCH MADNESS PLUS

Before mostly basketball and some baseball, a couple of news items of the day:

NCAA basketball March Madness begins tomorrow, March 18, for men and 19 for women.  Here is a surprise. from the New York Times.

The men's finals were mostly drawing more than 25 million TV viewers in 90's, while the women drew under 5 million.  Then, last year, for the first time, women games went up to 18.9 million to men only 14.8 million.  I suspect much of this was because Caitlin Clark of the Iowa Hawkeyes, spurred by her rivalry with Angel Reese of the LSU Tigers.

Both the men's and women's brackets have 68 finalists, with two games of mens bubble teams on Tuesday, November 18, and two teams on Wednesday 19, while the women's tournament first four contests will be on March 19 and 20.  The women final two games will be held on April 6 in the Amalie Arena, Tampa, Florida, and men's on April 7 in the Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas.

Major League Baseball begins play tomorrow:

  • From Tokyo, Japan, Los Angeles Dodgers vs Chicago Cubs at 6:10AM on FOX and your Dodger channel.
  • Then the full opening will occur on March 27.

Got to mention this, for how many of reading this have a day named after you.  Happy St. Patrick's Day.

  • Honolulu has a real parade, and a bash in the evening Downtown.
  • But this is nothing like what people do in places like Washington, D.C. do after work.  I spent three years there.  Even President Donald Trump's White House fountain is green.
  • Chicago dyed the Riverfront on Saturday, hosted by the plumbers union.  The green dye actually is orange when tossed into the river.  The tradition first started in 1961.
  • The first recorded St. Patrick's Day observance in America occurred in St. Augustine, Spanish Florida way back in 1600.
  • Lot of early St. Pat doings in Boston.
  • One of the largest parade in the world occurred in New York City on 17March1848, and typically today, there are 150,000 marchers.
  • While the East Coast had the original Irish immigrants, some of them moved west, and Butte, Montana has the highest percentage of Irish population on any city in the U.S., including Boston, and has quite a celebration, sometimes rowdy.
  • Enterprise, Alabama has the World's Smallest Saint Patrick's Day Parade, Hot Springs, Arkansas has the shortest, Henderson, Nevada has a 3-day festival, and there is one, of course, in Dublin, California.
  • Of course Dublin, Ireland has a parade, with half a million parade watchers.  Said to be the #1 St Paddy's Day celebration in the world.
  • #2?  London, England.
  • #3 New York City, #4 Chicago, #5 Buenos Aires, #6 Padua (Italy) and #7 Tokyo.
  • Sydney Opera House turns green.
  • Top ten strangest St. Patrick's Day traditions.
  • A day for wearing green, and consuming corned beef, green beer and Irish whisky.  Exactly what I will do today.

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicio...

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for...

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These a...
