100% ROTTEN TOMATOES FILMS AND SERIES

Before Rotten Tomatoes, I begin by sending you to a full summary by Time magazine of the upcoming presidential election, from the Democratic National Convention on Monday, August 19, to Inauguration Day on Monday, January 20, 2025, which is 156 days away.

  • The first night for Democrats in Chicago will be the equivalent of a eulogy for President Joe Biden.
  • He will then follow with a commencement address for the Kamala-Harris team and all Democrats running for office this year.
  • Five weeks ago, Donald Trump was almost assassinated.  A few days later was his Resurrection at the Republican National Convention.
  • It was exactly four weeks ago that Democrats had pretty much given up much hope of the races for the White House and Congress.
  • Then, the next day, July 21, President Joe Biden announced his decision to drop out of the presidential campaign, and smartly chose to endorse Kamala Harris, probably changing the fate of Humanity forever, for, remarkably, the Democratic Party totally reversed courses and now looks to sweep elections for the White House and Congress.
  • Never have I seen a political party so united.  To the contrary, Donald Trump only keeps trying to strengthen his links with his MAGA supporters, running an angry, crude, and, yes, weird, campaign, unconcerned about alienating the margin of victory he needs from Republicans and Independents.  Worse, JD Vance's past is coming back to haunt the team, as for example, he once compared Trump to Hitler.  By the way, ever wonder what Hitler's voice really sounded like in normal conversation, and if he spoke in English?

I just this weekend completed watching two Rotten Tomatoes 100% films, the 3-hour Tokyo Olympiad (I might add that if you clicked on that link, this is only the 2-hour condensed version), a documentary of the 1964 Games, directed by Kon Ichikawa, and a movie I only accidentally watched on Netflix called Mission: Cross.  After seeing this 2024 Korean film, I went to Rotten Tomatoes and was stunned see 100%.

I've talked about Tokyo Olympiad before, and won't say anything more about Mission: Cross because you can now see it yourself on Netflix.  For historical purposes, Rotten Tomatoes was so-called because this was a source that early on mostly panned, or threw rotten tomatoes at movies.  Thus, fresh tomatoes.  Tomorrow I'll provide an interesting story on how this organization got started.

  • First of all, it is rare for me to watch films or series on the standard TV channels.  I mostly turn to Netflix ($15.50/month) and Amazon Prime ($15/month, but essentially free because I buy a lot of stuff online anyway).  If you go out for one film, buy popcorn and something to drink, you'll be paying around $30 these days.  Plus, you need to drive, etc.  There is something about the comfort of home, and omnipresence of COVID-19, that further makes viewing safer and more convenient.
  • There are 105 100% films, with #1 having had the most reviews and #105 the least.  Does not really mean that #1 is necessarily better than #105.  Also, I have a gripe.  These 100% reviews are only by their reviewers.  Not considered is the audience.  They should have added the two to make this ranking.  You can click on that link to see the list, but I'll start with #1 and move on to others for my comments.
  • #1    Leave No Trace, 2018, 100/79, a true story about a father and daughter living a perfect but mysterious existence in a beautiful nature reserve near Portland, Oregon.
    • On Fandango, but also for a fee from You Tube.
    • Frankly, I don't know the director, Debra Granik (directed Oscar nominated Winter's Bone), nor the main characters, Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie.
  • #2    Toy Story 2, 1999, 100/87.
    • I don't bother with animated films.
    • Tom Hanks is Woody.
  • #3    Man On Wire, 2008, 100/87.
    • True documentary of how Pilippe Petit in 1974 walked between the now gone twin towers of the New York World Trade Center.
    • Got arrested for doing this, but released.
    • Saw this one.

  • #105  Stop Making Sense, 1984, 100/97.
    • American concert film of Talking Heads.
    • Directed by Jonathan Demme.
    • 19 songs.  Click for all of them.

I started today with a political message, and will end with another one.  I guess the message is that you want people to watch Trump's continued foibles.

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicious and troublesome.  This strain has also been spreading in

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for several months.  This is caused by stress more than anythi

WHY YOU SHOULD CONVERT TO A JAPANESE HIGH TECH TOILET

Did you know that   Oktoberfest   in Germany is mostly in September?  The very first day of Oktoberfest 2021 was supposed to be today, September 18, extending into October 3.  Well, as in 2020, Oktoberfest was cancelled. So why is it called by that month when it is held mostly in September?  The first celebration in 1810 was in October. Did you also know that Oktoberfest is held only in Munich?  These days seven million drink more than a liter ( about three typical cans ) of beer each, costing around $11.  Except for my wife and I when we followed the crowd to board the S-Bahn to the fairgrounds near Old Town.  It was drizzling a bit.  We bought a large pretzel outside of a typical barn where beer is served.  We did not know that you needed to get this inside the hall.  So no one came to serve us beer.  After a while we decided to have lunch, and the restaurant we settled on only served wine.  Thus, we might have been the only couple in the history of this event who failed to drink bee
