WHAT IS THE BEST WHISKY IN THE WORLD?

Yes, it's Sunday, but I can't think of anything particularly spiritual to share.  So here are some topical items, to end with what is the best whisky in the world:

    • At least you know something about the American women soccer team, which lost to Sweden 3-0, but sufficiently recovered to in a few hours meet Canada in a semi-final game.  While the U.S. women beat Canada in 35 previous meetings, Canada has a current nine-match winning streak and won bronze medals in the 2012 London Games and the 2018 Rio Olympics.  The USA is nevertheless heavily favored, and should meet its nemesis, Sweden, or Australia, in the finals.
    • Both American basketball teams are doing well enough, but have had tough matches against nobodies, with the men actually losing a game to France.
    • The swimming star of the Games was Emma McKeon of Australia, who won seven medals, four gold.  However, Michael Phelps at the 2008 Beijing Olympics got eight gold medals.
  • By the way, while China has 23 gold medals to the USA's 20, we have 59 total medals to China's 50.  That Russian committee has 44.  The odds of the USA winning the most medals are -1000.  What does that mean?  Go to the right column BETTING ODDS CALCULATOR and click on Go To.  You will see that the U.S. has a 91% chance of to get the most medals. Japan?  4%.

For all practical purposes, there are two types of whiskies, bourbon and scotch.  Irish versions are like scotch and rye is a bourbon.  To begin, this beverage is spelled WHISKEY in the U.S and Ireland, and WHISKY just about everywhere else.  The term whisky comes from the Gaelic "water of life."

The origin is Scotland, in the 1700's, although there is reference as far back as 1494, two years after Columbus discovered America.  As of today, there are 134 Scotch whisky distilleries in Scotland.  They are all brewed from barley and aged in oak for three years or more.  There are many variations, but single malt and blended are two that suffice.

All scotch comes from Scotland.  Those Japanese scotches are labeled whisky, and derived from Scotland, mostly by Masataka Taketsuru, who learned the art in Scotland, and returned to Japan in the early 1920's with a Scottish wife to help Shinjiro Torii establish Suntory, starting with a distillery in Yamazaki (said to be the spot for the best water in Japan, a reason why legendary teen master Sen no Rikyu built his tearoom there) just to the Kyoto side of Osaka.  Taketsuru moved to Hokkaido in 1934 to start his own company, which became Nikka, established at Yoichi.

In 2001 Nikka's 10-year old Yoichi single malt won the Best of Best Whisky Magazine award, breaking the hold that Scotland had since the beginning.

  • Theoretically, you can purchase a bottle of this brew from Blackwell's for $95.  Good luck.
  • Decanta sells a MINIATURE bottle for $295, and a full bottle for $1300.
  • Rare Whiskey Shop sells it for $549.02.
  • Here is an excellent review.
  • Why such a wide range?  Nikka discontinued most if its brands in 2017, and it's possible that a certain outlet could well have a sufficient number so as to sell at a lower price.

Japanese whiskies like Yamazaki, Hibiki and others have since then been accordingly selected, but the World Whiskies Award now has so many categories, that they don't mean much. However, The Glenallachi 10-year old Batch 4 seems like a good buy today.  Various vendors sell it for a little more than $80/bottle.

In 2015 Kavalan's Vinho Barrique was named the Best Single Malt Whisky.  Who?  Kavalan is from Taiwan.  The Lee family started way back in 1959 selling pesticides and mosquito repellent, and in 1979 expanded into root beer.   In 2006, son Tien-Tsai Lee, founder of what became a beverage conglomerate, took advantage of a change in Taiwanese law to brew alcohol.  No Taketsuru story, no hanging out in Scotland, or Japan.  He got together with a Taiwanese team of engineers, food technologist, Jim Swan (right, from Scotland) and Yuan Ian Chang (studied in the UK, standing next to Swan) to design and operate the distillery.  The secret could well be Swan's STR American oak sherry cask treatment.

The other attraction is that it's an easier whisky to drink, especially for the uninitiated.  Plus, it does not hurt that Kavalan during past decade has won 220 awards.  They now have 18 different varieties.  Prices are not outrageous because it produces 9 million liters/year, making it one of the largest single malt whisky distilleries in the world.  It is comparable in size to Glenlivet

Let me end with a series of ads from Decanta:

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicio...

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for...

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These a...
