But before God, interesting baseball afternoon for me yesterday.
- Took a nap, woke up to an ending of a Major League Baseball game between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.
- Dodgers 18 - Yankees 2, the most ever runs the Los Angeles team had over their New York rivals, ever. With 21 hits.
- Yankees? Two home runs by Aaron Judge, who is on one of my fantasy teams.
- The Dodgers and Yankees are the favorites to make the World Series final.
- Switched stations to the Washington Nationals at Arizona Diamond Backs.
- First inning, no outs. Nationals had already scored 9 runs.
- First out. Crowd went wild.
- Nationals scored 10 runs in the first inning.
- Third out. Crowd went wild.
- Two more high scoring games: Rays 16 - Astros 3. Brewers 17 - Phillies 7.
- Mind you, there were a number of pitching battles yesterday.
- Pirates 2 - Padres 0.
- Cubs 2- Reds 0.
- Cardinals 2- Rangers 0.
- Royals 1- Tigers 0.
- Marlins 1 - Giants 0.
- To bring you up to date on my mission impossible, the four ESPN baseball fantasy teams I could not access during my one month trip in April/May, since my return two weeks ago, has (in ten team leagues), improved from #4, #6, #6, #9 to 4th, 4th, 5th and 7th. So I'm making progress, and there are 13 weeks left in the season.
- Why God Doesn't Exist: The Truth Religion Won't Tell You. There have been 1,217 comments. Here are the two most recent ones.
- I earlier this week mentioned the Four Horsemen of New Atheist. Well, they produced a book in 2007 titled: The Four Horsemen: the Conversation that Sparked an Atheist Revolution.
- One of them, Christopher Hitchens, was the person quoted at the front of the above video.
- A Britisher from the University of Oxford, he emigrated to the U.S. in the 1980s.
- Here is one of his videos: God is Not Great.
- Says he is an antitheist.
- Has written 18 books.
- Passed away in 2011 at the age of 52.
- Here is American Michael Shermer on God does NOT exist.
- Is a 70-year old executive director of The Skeptics Society and a libertarian.
- For a decade was a professional long distance cyclist, and invented innovative cycling gloves and saddles.
- Has written over a dozen books.
- Richard Dawkins has been the most active of the group. Here are two videos on this subject.
- The God Delusion. Which is also the title of one his 38 books.
- Why Belief in God is an Outdated Superstition.
- Dawkins is an 84-year old British evolutionary biologist from the University of Oxford, and is a noted atheist author who has won several publishing and academic awards.
- 82-year old Daniel Dennett on Good Reasons for Believing in God. Yes, this is the title.
- From Tufts University.
- A vocal atheist and secularist.
- 58-year old Samuel Harris is an American philosopher and neuroscientist.
- Went to Stanford University, but in his sophomore year, left to expand his psychoactive experience, visiting India and Nepal, plus serving as a volunteer guard for the Dalai Lama.
- Returned to Stanford in 1997 after eleven years overseas. Earned a B.A. degree in philosophy in 2000.
- Began writing The End of Faith after that 9/11 cataclysm, and published the book in 2004.
- Got a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience in 2009 from UCLA, so that he could use magnetic resonance imaging to measure how the brain reacts to beliefs and such.
- I mention so much about his education and expansion because he accomplished something I similarly dreamed about, but never did quite accomplish.
- For example, after I graduated from Stanford in chemical engineering, I seriously thought about going to Sophia University in Tokyo to get a degree in art.
- My close friends mostly joined the first year of the Peace Corps to go to places in Africa and the South Pacific, but I was not too excited about $99/month for a dangerous lifestyle, so I instead went to Naalehu, the southernmost community in the USA, for $500/month and free housing, to save the Hawaii sugar industry.
- After a few years of this form of suffering, I decided to leave for law school or further my efforts in chemical engineering. The company I was working for, C. Brewer, was willing to pay my salary to go to LSU in Baton Rouge to get a sugar engineering degree, so I took that offer and ended up with a PhD in biochemical engineering. Ended up in the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaii in 1972. The movie Paper Chase in 1973 inspired me add law to my degrees, but I never did leave my academic life. Missed opportunities or wisdom?
- However, I found ways to live my technological and life fantasies by working for a while at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on laser fusion, the NASA Ames Research Center on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence and the U.S. Senate to draft original bills in hydrogen and ocean energy.
- So while I had my own kind of exploratory adventures, I still admire what Harris did a bit more.
- Says Harris, there is no God. Or watch him expound on God.
