THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE ATHEIST REVOLUTION: There is no GOD.

But before God, interesting baseball afternoon for me yesterday.

  •  Took a nap, woke up to an ending of a Major League Baseball game between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.
    • Dodgers 18 - Yankees 2, the most ever runs the Los Angeles team had over their New York rivals, ever.  With 21 hits.
    • Yankees?  Two home runs by Aaron Judge, who is on one of my fantasy teams.
    • The Dodgers and Yankees are the favorites to make the World Series final.
  • Switched stations to the Washington Nationals at Arizona Diamond Backs.
    • First inning, no outs.  Nationals had already scored 9 runs.
    • First out.  Crowd went wild.
    • Nationals scored 10 runs in the first inning.
    • Third out.  Crowd went wild.
  • Two more high scoring games:  Rays 16 - Astros 3.  Brewers 17 - Phillies 7.
  • Mind you, there were a number of pitching battles yesterday.
    • Pirates 2 - Padres 0.
    • Cubs 2- Reds 0.
    • Cardinals 2- Rangers 0.
    • Royals 1- Tigers 0.
    • Marlins 1 - Giants 0.
  • To bring you up to date on my mission impossible, the four ESPN baseball fantasy teams I could not access during my one month trip in April/May, since my return two weeks ago, has (in ten team leagues), improved from #4, #6, #6, #9 to 4th, 4th, 5th and 7th.  So I'm making progress, and there are 13 weeks left in the season.

Either God exists or not.  Churches today will make the case for God.   To provide the contrary viewpoint, I'll use videos from You Tube.

If I loved people, I couldn't sit for thousands of years watching people suffering . To promise a great life after death, is no reward for the suffering.

Telling people God doesn't exist is like a parent breaking the news about Santa. Some will take the news better than others.

  • Here is  American Michael Shermer on God does NOT exist.
    • Is a 70-year old executive director of The Skeptics Society and a libertarian.
    • For a decade was a professional long distance cyclist, and invented innovative cycling gloves and saddles.
    • Has written over a dozen books.
  • Richard Dawkins has been the most active of the group.  Here are two videos on this subject.
  • 58-year old Samuel Harris is an American philosopher and neuroscientist.
    • Went to Stanford University, but in his sophomore year, left to expand his psychoactive experience, visiting India and Nepal, plus serving as a volunteer guard for the Dalai Lama.
    • Returned to Stanford in 1997 after eleven years overseas.  Earned a B.A. degree in philosophy in 2000.
    • Began writing The End of Faith after that 9/11 cataclysm, and published the book in 2004.
    • Got a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience in 2009 from UCLA, so that he could use magnetic resonance imaging to measure how the brain reacts to beliefs and such.
    • I mention so much about his education and expansion because he accomplished something I similarly dreamed about, but never did quite accomplish.
  • For example, after I graduated from Stanford in chemical engineering, I seriously thought about going to Sophia University in Tokyo to get a degree in art.
  • My close friends mostly joined the first year of the Peace Corps to go to places in Africa and the South Pacific, but I was not too excited about $99/month for a dangerous lifestyle, so  I instead went to Naalehu, the southernmost community in the USA, for $500/month and free housing, to save the Hawaii sugar industry.
  • After a few years of this form of suffering, I decided to leave for law school or further my efforts in chemical engineering.  The company I was working for, C. Brewer, was willing to pay my salary to go to LSU in Baton Rouge to get a sugar engineering degree, so I took that offer and ended up with a PhD in biochemical engineering.  Ended up in the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaii in 1972.  The movie Paper Chase in 1973 inspired me add law to my degrees, but I never did leave my academic life.  Missed opportunities or wisdom?
  • However, I found ways to live my technological and life fantasies by working for a while at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on laser fusion, the NASA Ames Research Center on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence and the U.S. Senate to draft original bills in hydrogen and ocean energy.
  • So while I had my own kind of exploratory adventures, I still admire what Harris did a bit more.
  • Says Harris, there is no God.  Or watch him expound on God.

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These a...

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicio...

IS FLORIDA AGAIN THREATENED BY A MEGA TSUNAMI FROM LA PALMA?

From the morning  New York Times : Here is a graph comparing average daily COVID-19 deaths/100,000 people, and the USA is doing something really wrong: The difference between our country and Europe is that we have flubbed the availability of cheap and ubiquitous at-home RAPID testing.  They have covered this base. There are two obvious problems: The FDA is much too bureaucratic about quickly approving anything related to this pandemic, including testing. We seem stuck with the test that takes one to several days to get your result. The good news is that the Biden administration has finally realized this problem and through executive order hope to soon flood the market with take home testing that at first will be subsidized to make it affordable. Now, on to getting everyone vaccinated, especially 5-11 years olds ( and we are close to getting to making this happen ), the undereducated and Republicans.  What to do about the latter two? The other concern is whether we a...
