DEMOCRACY, U.S. DOLLAR AND SQUID GAME Season 3

Sure, the Supreme Court is being influenced by associate justices from Donald Trump's first term.  And of course, it is a conservative court.  However, their final decision for this season was announced today, and gives Trump what he wanted.  Block birthright citizenship to children of illegal immigrants, and also, in effect, curtailing the power of individual district court judges.  I can't believe they are colluding with him.  They must be just buying time to avoid judgement day, for if Trump defies a major decision by them, he becomes a dictator, for the Supreme Court, and too the U.S. Congress, don't have any enforcement powers.  The makers of our Constitution screwed up with this flaw.  By what happened today, American Democracy seems safe until next October.

The U.S.dollar has dipped to a 3-year low.

  • Why?  Blame President Donald Trump.
  • What this means is you are paying more for imported goods.  Maybe Trump is getting what he wished for, which is for you to only buy domestic.
  • You are also spending more on international travel.  Thus, many will now only vacation in the USA.
  • Perhaps Trump's economic plan is working.
  • Is this good?
Here are two charts comparing the U.S. Dollar to the Japanese Yen (above) and European Euro (below).

Today: 144  Yen to U.S. Dollar
            1.17 Euro to U.S. Dollar

I'll only analyze the Yen/Dollar relationship, for my future travels will focus on the Orient.  However, into the future, chances are that the value of the U.S. dollar should not make much difference if you are anywhere in the world.
  • In July of last year, it was 162 Yen to the Dollar.
  • This rate is 145 today.
  • In other words, a dinner tab of $145 dollars in Tokyo last year would today cost me $162 today.
  • Travel to Japan has been great for the past two years.  However, this rate was 103.5Y to the dollar around Christmas time in 2020.  So this same dinner would have cost $227 4.5 years ago.  Of course, this was during the heat of the COVID pandemic, so no one traveled then.
  • This fiscal condition remained going back to Christmas of 2013, when the exchange rate was around 103.
  • However, during the winter period in 2012, the exchange rate was only 75Y to the $.  This same $162 dollar today would have cost $312 in 2012.
  • Going back further, in August of 1990, the exchange rate was what it is today, around 145Y to the dollar.
  • However, in January of 1985 it was 254Y to the $, and in October of 1982 was 272Y to the $.
  • October of 1975?  358Y to the $.  Thus, this same $162 dinner today in Tokyo would have cost $73 in 1975.
  • Of course, with inflation and all that, these dollar comparisons are meaningless.  But the relativity applies, if you comprehend what I'm saying.

Squid Game Season 3 begins today on Netflix.  Without giving away anything, this is what Time magazine said:

That endgame is nothing short of gutting. Though we do get the occasional glimpse of hope, it’s overshadowed by horror after horror, each revealing a new dimension of Director Hwang’s diatribe against greed. This doesn’t make Season 3 a rehash of Season 1 but a profound, frequently poignant, and, yes, thrillingly twist-packed deepening of its themes. It is, in particular, an acknowledgment that individual heroes, burdened by conscience and a disproportionately low share of resources, can only do so much in the face of systemic evil. As one wise character laments to Gi-hun: “Bad people do bad things, but they blame others and go on to live in peace. Good people, on the other hand, beat themselves up about the smallest things.” To pretend a Squid Game victory could be anything but pyrrhic would be to accept a fairy tale written by the worst people on the planet. The only true victory would be a victory over Squid Game. So, Hwang is asking, when will the millions of us watching impotently from the sidelines join the Gi-huns of the world?

Watch the official trailer.

Rotten Tomatoes:  Squid Game Season 1 95/83, Season 2 83/63 and Season 3 90/50.  The first number represents the reviewer, while the second refers to the audience.  Interesting that reviewers rated this series high, while the audience dropped.  This 88% rating is as of today, but not sure what this number represents.  I suspect it is an early number from Rotten Tomatoes reviewers. for if you click on that latest link, then click on the reference for Rotten Tomatoes, you get 90%.

Oh, one more thing.  That fireball over the Georgia sky at 12:25PM yesterday was a meteor.

About this meteor.
  • Was probably a member of the Beta Taurid meteor shower which peaked on June 25.
  • First seen  48 miles above the town of Oxford, Georgia, moving southwest at 30,000 miles/hour.
  • Probably had a diameter of three feet and weighed around a ton.
  • Exploded 27 miles above West Forest, Georgia, creating sonic booms.
  • The estimate is that there is one daylight event per month from all over the world.
  • Of all the reported fireballs, only one in 700 are reported in daylight hours, so the event yesterday was unusual.

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

ON THE MATTER OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Fede...

THE TRUMP ENERGY PROGRAM

From  Time  magazine, I begin with a slew of Trump topics.  You can read the details. The unpopular Big Beautiful Bill is now in the House . The only truly effective anti-Trump person:  Elon Musk. The Trump Gaza ceasefire proposal . The July 4th Free American Anti-Trump Protest planned across the USA . This site began as a renewable energy and environment blog, and has evolved to just about any subject.  I try to keep Wednesdays for sci-tech, with perhaps a monthly focus on energy.  More recently, I've drawn from the  Energy Matters  info sent to me by the American Energy Society.  I'm inserting direct quotes this time to eliminate my predilections for more credibility. This service starts with some broad topics. - Fossil fuels: Helium is locked in a supply crunch, and prices are surging. - Renewables: Congress will probably pass new renewable fuel standards for 2026 and 2027. - Policy: President Trump is now focused on Califor...
