Those Trump tariffs are roiling the stock markets of the world. From the New York Times this morning:
The blue-chip average traded up as high as by around 892 points and as low as about 1,703 points in the red, as of shortly after 3 p.m. ET. That 2,595.24-point swing is the widest in the 30-stock index’s history, according to a CNBC data analysis.
- Trump said Sunday evening on the market rout: “I don’t want anything to go down, but sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.”
- Trump then threatened China on Monday via Truth Social: “If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose additional tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th. Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated!”
Some CEOs, like BlackRock's Larry Fink (above), think the U.S. is probably in recession right now. Actually the market is only down about 10%. Here is how much it drops in a recession.
A White House spokesperson, Anna Kelly, said that the institute “has failed to deliver peace” and that Trump “is carrying out his mandate to eliminate bloat and save taxpayer dollars”.
To be more specific:The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is an American independent, nonprofit, national institute funded by the U.S. Congress and tasked with promoting conflict resolution and prevention worldwide.[3]
- In 1981, a Peace Commission was formed by President Jimmy Carter, which was chaired by Senator Spark Matsunaga.
- The Institute was established 39 years ago in 1984 by congressional legislation, and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.
- Has a budget of $55 million/year.
- There is a bipartisan board of 15 members, including the secretary of defense, the secretary of state and the president of the National Defense University.
- Has trained 65,000 professionals since its inception.
- Representative Wesley Bell (D-Mo) led 27 colleagues in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemning these firings, expressing alarm that he is doing this without Congressional approval? So what happened? Nothing. The Administration just tosses anything from Democrats into the trash can.
I should mention that President Trump today met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
When Trump talks to Putin, they discuss piece, not peace.-
