WE'RE IN SINGAPORE

Since this blog was created more than 15 years ago, 2.92 million individuals have visited this site from 221 countries.  There there are only 195 actual countries, but there are domains for places like Antarctica, so there are 26 locations not considered to be nations.  For a reason I can't explain, more people/million from Singapore visit this blog site by a very large amount:

  • Singapore  75,161
  • USA  706
  • Canada  450
  • Australia  319
  • UK  292
  • Netherlands 236
  • Denmark 216
  • France  141
  • Germany 140
  • Japan  76
  • Thailand  50
I will be visiting countries shown in BOLD (blue) print on this global adventure.

The key question is why is Singapore so far ahead?  Maybe because English is the dominant language of the country. But that's also true for many other nations.  Anyone in Singapore:  send me an e-mail if you think you know why.

Perhaps because Singapore is technologically advanced and particularly curious about what I write.

Okay, then, we were yesterday in Japan.  Caught Singapore Air from Narita to Changi.
I asked for beer and sake for my meal.  But the meal did not come for more than an hour after we departed.  That sake is Miyakanbai Junmai Ginjo and made out of 100%Miyama Nishiki rice, where 45% of the exterior was polished off.  Absolutely excellent.
First course was Singapore Chicken Satay with onions, cucumber and spicy peanut sauce.

Added a Suntory Chita Single Grain Japanese Whisky.  This is a course with Sakura flavored soba.  Not the pink color of the noodle.
Watched Killers of the Flower Moon Rotten Tomatoes 93%/84%. Robert Niro and Martin Scorsese made their first film, Mean Streets, together in 1973, 51 years ago.
Yuzu Miso Prawn Salad and Rosemary Steak followed.
Flight took 7 hours.

Immigration/customs were complicated by a QR code.  Turned out that we had to have gotten the verifiable code before getting into Singapore. This code is the equivalent of those forms you fill out on an international flight.  But we are too old to understand that, and wouldn't have known how to do it anyway.  So we were sent back to another table where a 12-year old child coached us on what to do.  Well, she looked like someone who was 12.  And, by the way, the Limousine Bus from the Tokyo Westin to Narita Airport also required one of these.  If you're like us and not equipped to enter this current high tech world, reconsider your urge to travel.

Caught a cab to the Marriott Tang Plaza, ariving around 5:15PM.  Cocktail serving in the M Club began at 5:30.  By the time we entered, 48 of the 50 tables were occupied.  Photo below just as we were about to return to our room.  Note the mauve or lavender-colored roses.  Never saw that before.
We have nothing planned for tomorrow.

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These a...

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicio...

IS FLORIDA AGAIN THREATENED BY A MEGA TSUNAMI FROM LA PALMA?

From the morning  New York Times : Here is a graph comparing average daily COVID-19 deaths/100,000 people, and the USA is doing something really wrong: The difference between our country and Europe is that we have flubbed the availability of cheap and ubiquitous at-home RAPID testing.  They have covered this base. There are two obvious problems: The FDA is much too bureaucratic about quickly approving anything related to this pandemic, including testing. We seem stuck with the test that takes one to several days to get your result. The good news is that the Biden administration has finally realized this problem and through executive order hope to soon flood the market with take home testing that at first will be subsidized to make it affordable. Now, on to getting everyone vaccinated, especially 5-11 years olds ( and we are close to getting to making this happen ), the undereducated and Republicans.  What to do about the latter two? The other concern is whether we a...
