GLOBAL MUSICAL JOURNEY

According to the Sunday New York Times:

Six to eight million people may have died from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic, compared with 3.4 million deaths recorded in countries’ official reporting.

In the U.S., more than 400 colleges and universities are requiring students to be vaccinated for Covid-19. Almost all are in states that voted for President Biden.

About that Eurovision Song Contest, Maneskin of Italy won, singing Zitti E Buono.

I've regularly been featuring global adventures in anticipation of our world cruise beginning in January of 2022, with a stop in Dubai for the World Expo.  On this Sunday, it seemed ideal to take you around the world via Radio Garden.  The itinerary I will select might well be what we will do in 2023 to incorporate the Buenos Aires World Fair, with a theme of Science, Innovation, Art and Creativity for Human Development.

As I live in Honolulu, the journey will begin with Hawaiian music.  Click on that and you can hear something from the middle of the Pacific.

My first of 15 legs is almost always a 7 hour flight to Tokyo.  As I fly over the International Dateline, it is already Monday.  Listen.moe (after you get there, you need to click on the play button) is one of ten stations listed for this city.  You can go outside Tokyo, as for example, FM 87.9 in Odawawara.  Hmm...classic rock.  Or FM 76.7 in Ota...for light jazz.

Next, Seoul, less than two hours away by air.  Here is Aewen Radio for K-Pop.  Jinli Radio for new wave?

Six hours from Incheon Airport to Bangkok.  First station is Capitol.FM, which is playing American oldies but goodies.  FM 88 Bangkok plays light jazz.  There are 37 stations, and one is Fung Fung Fung.

A short hop to Singapore, where I will land at Changi Airport (left) #1 in the world.  I'm sent to Capital FM 95.8.  Speaks English, but plays local music.  There are 25 stations, and another is Gold 905, playing oldies, not necessarily from the U.S.  Love 972 is into romantic Singapore popular songs.

I once spent a few days in Mauritius, and always wanted to return, so I will take a 7-hour flight to get there.  Radio One FM 100.8 is playing popular contemporary songs, whatever that means.  Speaks English.  After all, this was a British colony.  Rock Mauritius features rock music.

Next, a 6.5 hour flight to Dubai for the World Expo, which begins in October of this year.  Dubai Radio is in some kind of Arabic tongue.  Russian Emirates Radio must be playing modern Russian music.  There are 23 stations, and DIMusic Club Trance is into music you would dance to in a modern discotheque.

Leg number 7 is on Lufthansa to Munich, where I listen to Radio Bavaria International.  Speaks English and plays older American music.  Another of the 44 stations is BR Klassik, playing classical music.  The day to be in Munich in 2022 is February, when Fasching is celebrated.  The city goes bonkers with drinking in the streets, in a controlled fashion.  But people walking around and drinking from a whole bottle of wine, with many in costumes.  I was there 11 years ago, and had fabulous lunch at the Hotel Konigshof.  There is Octoberfest, which goes on for a couple of weeks, usually starting soon after mid-September.

Leg #8 would be a flight to where a river cruise to Amsterdam can be started.  Probably a city in Switzerland like Basel, where Crystal has a seven nighter.  The Netherlands is where Radio Garden began.  There are now more than 8,500 linked stations.  Energy Basel plays dance music, while you can imagine what Radio Swiss Jazz plays.
You subtract a leg if you have an open jaw, so we are now in Amsterdam, where there are 58 stations.  AmsterdamFM 106.8 plays classical music.  Among the other 57 are Club Dance Radio, Coconut Radio,  Freak Radio and The Oldie Station.  The tulips might be in bloom.
I might need to get to London to fly to South America.  It has been a few years since my last visit.  Perhaps a West End show.  There is a W hotel there.  Wow, this city has 400 radio stations.  24/7 London Radio, 24/7 International Radio, Abacus Beethoven, Abacus Mozart, Abacus Ocean (sounds of the natural sea), Absolute Radio '60s, BBC Radio 1, Birdsong (singing birds), Boogaloo Radio (curious?), Erotic FM (curious?), Fantasy FM and Golden Years Radio.

Leg #11 would be London to Buenos Aires.  A Specialized World Expo will occur from 15 January to 15 April 2023.  I get sent to Doo Bop playing doo bop.  There are 123 stations, and one is Radio Disney FM 94.3 which is not playing anything from Disney.

I can't seem to find a Star Alliance flight from Buenos Aires to Washington, DC, but I suspect something will open up by 2023.  Having lived there for three years, I remember that the spring colors with cherry blossoms and tulips are incredible.  WAMU HD2 Bluegrass Country is my first stop.  There are 30 stations, one being Classical WETA 90.9.

Will drop by to see my brother in Las Vegas.  Haven't been there for years.  Do we take the cheapie California Hotel package or splurge on something like the Cosmopolitan, which is linked to Marriott?  Stations include Pipeline 2 Paradise Hawaiian, KCNV FM 89.7 Classical, and Hot 97.7.

Leg 14 would need to be San Francisco to see a lot of friends.  A traditional lunch at Taddich Grill.  Perhaps a wine tasting.  San Francisco has 93 stations:  KQED FM 88.5, Classical KDFC 104.9 FM, 1000 Oldies, SOMA Folk Forward, StillStream.....

Final leg, back home in Honolulu.

You too can create your own FREE around the world adventure by clicking on Radio Garden.  To pick your starting point, click/hold the globe and move to your desired location.  Then, tour the world.

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicious and troublesome.  This strain has also been spreading in

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for several months.  This is caused by stress more than anythi

THE CRYPTO REVOLUTION

Is this the beginning of the next pandemic surge?  From the  New York Times  this morning. You've read about  Philadelphia's return to indoor masks .   But what about the other regions?   Remember when the Alpha variant hit Michigan and Minnesota about a year ago...then fizzled?   So sure predictions are difficult.  Of course, most new cases are being caused by the Omicron BA.2 subvariant, the most contagious virus yet, but the combination of vaccinations, high number of previous asymptomatic cases, home tests ( which are generally not reported ) and mildness of the resultant symptoms is not affecting the hospitalization rate, with a continuing decline of death rates.   We are now in the mode of uncertainty tinged with optimism. The  crypto world is erupting .  It's possible that this could become a revolution.  However, anything relatively new remains perilous, and this financing option could just as easily blow up into obscurity, for the system is vulnerable to too many r
