DEXTER, RAINMAKER AND SUITS

Dexter Resurrection and The Rainmaker are two series I'm currently watching not from Netflix or Prime.

  • Dexter Resurrection (Rotten Tomatoes, 94/86) is the latest continuation of Dexter (RT 71/81) starring Michael C. Hall, which began on Showtime in 2006, and endured for seven seasons.
    • In that original series, Hall played Dexter Morgan, a forensic technician for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department.
    • However, he led a secret parallel life as a vigilante serial killer of murderers
    • Extremely bloody and gory, but nothing compared to Squid Game (RT 86/66) from South Korea.  In a ranking by IMDb ten years ago, Dexter was #14 in a list of 18 most gory and bloody shows.  Earlier this year Collider had a top ten most violent shows of all time, and neither series was included.  Three were animated productions and most violent was Warrior (2019-present).  Rotten Tomatoes gave it 79/95 ratings.  There were three seasons.    Next most violent was Game of Thrones.  RT scored the 8 seasons 89/85.  Haven't seen either of these two series for they aired on Max.  Good scores, indicating why there are so many of these.
  • After Dexter, Showtime had a sequel, Dexter: New Blood (RT 77/74), 10 episodes, from 7November2021 to 9January2022.
  • There was a prequel, Dexter: Original Sin (RT 70/78), starring Patrick Gibson as Dexter, going back 15 years to 1991 when he was in his youth, also on Showtime.  Ten episodes.

  • The Rainmaker
(a full episode) is a new USA Network series based on John Grisham's 1995 novel of the same name.  Stars Milo Callaghan and John Slattery.  Grisham is an executive producer.
  • Rotten Tomatoes gave it 45/80 scores. but there are only 4 episodes, and the first two were interesting enough that I'll watch the final two.  Says Rotten Tomatoes:  Young attorney Rudy Baylor, alongside Bruiser Stone and Deck Shifflet, battles a powerful law firm led by Leo F. Drummond and his girlfriend, Sarah Plankmore, unearthing a dark conspiracy that shows how far his opponents are willing to go to win.
  • Rainmaker kind of reminds me of Suits, another law series.  I reported on this series earlier this year.
    • I said:

  • First season appeared in 2011 with 12 episodes.
  • Then seasons 2 to 8, with each having 16 episodes.
  • Season 9, only 10 episodes, released in 2019.

  • There are two ways to watch this series.
  • On the USA Network, which can get confusing if you haven't already begun.
  • Or Netflix, because the entire suite of series is conveniently catalogued.
  • I should add that there is a new Suits LA which began in 2023, but is not as well-rated.
  • So, anyway, back to the original, Rotten Tomatoes have the series 91/87 ratings, with seasons 4-7 getting 100% from reviewers.  I am yet only in season 1.
  • That photo to the right are of two of the stars, Mike Ross and Megan Markle (now the Duchess of Sussex, married Prince Harry in 2018).

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

ON THE MATTER OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Fede...

THE TRUMP ENERGY PROGRAM

From  Time  magazine, I begin with a slew of Trump topics.  You can read the details. The unpopular Big Beautiful Bill is now in the House . The only truly effective anti-Trump person:  Elon Musk. The Trump Gaza ceasefire proposal . The July 4th Free American Anti-Trump Protest planned across the USA . This site began as a renewable energy and environment blog, and has evolved to just about any subject.  I try to keep Wednesdays for sci-tech, with perhaps a monthly focus on energy.  More recently, I've drawn from the  Energy Matters  info sent to me by the American Energy Society.  I'm inserting direct quotes this time to eliminate my predilections for more credibility. This service starts with some broad topics. - Fossil fuels: Helium is locked in a supply crunch, and prices are surging. - Renewables: Congress will probably pass new renewable fuel standards for 2026 and 2027. - Policy: President Trump is now focused on Califor...
