WORLD BUSINESS ACADEMY on HYDROGEN

I haven't been active, but I am a member of the World Business Academy.  I've known the President & Founder, Rinaldo Brutoco, for a long time.  In my mind, I'm sure I helped spur his original interest in hydrogen.  Read this article from Financial Times:

  • “People said Steve Jobs was crazy. Why would anybody want a personal computer? Why would I want a fax machine? Why would I want an automobile, when horses do such a good job? All of these disruptive changes occurred because the economics are overwhelming,” says entrepreneur Rinaldo S Brutoco from his home in Santa Barbara, California. “That's what's going to happen here. It's no longer a question of whether hydrogen is going to happen. We are going to be in a hydrogen economy. Mark my words, hydrogen will be bigger than the Industrial Revolution.”
  • Hydrogen fuel, as Brutoco would be the first to tell you, is a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels that creates fresh water as its only byproduct.
  • Brutoco speaks with evangelical zeal about H2 Clipper, the California-based company he now heads to improve hydrogen supply chains. Its innovations include an airship that can transport hydrogen more easily than ever before, and a safety pipe for routing it into and out of ports and urban areas.
  • The following is a condensed version of one of his more recent announcements to the membership.

August 2024 Edition
Dear Academy Members and Supporters.

This month’s newsletter demonstrates that the Academy is becoming an increasingly credible source of cutting-edge information on hydrogen and other vital topics related to healing our planet. I am immensely proud of the variety and quality of material we are producing, even amid the pressures on our organization—particularly the need for increased financial support. The public’s growing appreciation for our work is encouraging.

Lastly, as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, the Academy does not endorse or oppose political candidates. The “Did You Know?” section in this newsletter, featuring Tim Walz, is intended to highlight the positive shift in his environmental stance since his time as a Congressman where he voted against the environment, and for his transformation into an active environmentalist as Governor of Minnesota. While we are not endorsing the Harris-Walz ticket, we do acknowledge their pursuit of a pro-environmental agenda, which is vital for humanity.

Thank you for being part of our journey and for helping us drive meaningful change.

With appreciation,
Rinaldo S. Brutoco
President & Founder

The Hydrogen Revolution in Rail: A Global Transformation in Motion
Authored by Rinaldo S. Brutoco

A monumental transformation is underway in the world of locomotives. Hydrogen trains are already rolling in over a dozen countries, signaling an inevitable shift in rail transportation. Recent news reports highlight this trend. In April, CSX debuted its first hydrogen-powered freight locomotive; in May, Alstom was recognized by Fast Company for its first H2-powered Canadian passenger train; and in June, Stadler delivered in California the first hybrid hydrogen and battery electric passenger train meeting Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.

Hydrogen Transport with Pipe and Dirigibles

Brian DeBruine, director of the nonprofit Colorado Hydrogen Project, interviewed Rinaldo Brutoco on the August 2nd episode titled Hydrogen Transport with Pipe and Dirigibles. The HydrogenNowCast, is devoted to encouraging the deployment of Fuel Cell EVs, hydrogen fueling, and hydrogen infrastructure throughout the world. Our intent is to encourage and motivate others to take charge, to help deploy hydrogen as a means to decarbonize the transportation and energy sectors and accelerate the movement to stop climate change.

Harnessing the Oceans to Combat Climate Change: The Possible Next Wave in Geoengineering
Authored by Rinaldo S. Brutoco

As global temperatures continue to rise, the search for solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change intensifies. Among the various options, solar radiation modification, also referred to as solar geoengineering, is gaining traction as a potential method to temporarily reduce global temperatures. This technique, which involves reflecting the sun’s energy back into space, is increasingly viewed as a temporary way to cool the Earth until greenhouse gas emissions can be sufficiently reduced by lessening our reliance on fossil fuels.

Beyond ammonia: Rethinking the role for ammonia within a vibrant
H2 economy—Part 2
Authored by Rinaldo S. Brutoco

As the world increasingly seeks sustainable and efficient energy solutions, there is a general consensus that hydrogen (H2) will play a significant role. This makes the question of how this product is best transported not just a technical issue, but also one with profound environmental, economic and geopolitical implications. A growing number of policymakers and ammonia (NH3) industry proponents have recently begun to champion NH3 as the best way to transport H2 and as a viable alternative to pure H2 for various applications, including as a fuel for the maritime industry, an energy storage medium and feedstock for electricity generation.

'No major blockers' | Gas transmission network can be repurposed to 100% hydrogen, three-year 'real life' test concludes

A three-year project testing how the existing gas transmission system would cope with hydrogen blends and 100% hydrogen has concluded “that there are no major blockers to repurposing our network to transport hydrogen”, according to UK operator National Gas Transmission (NGT), which commissioned the study.

The NFL season kicks off tomorrow, with the Ravens visiting the Chiefs.  You will immediately notice something different from the kick-off.

The early returns look promising. More than 70% of kickoffs were returned in the 2024 preseason, compared to 54.8% during last year’s preseason. The NFL saw 18 returns of at least 40 yards this preseason, double the number from 2023

ON THE MATTER OF PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Hawaii today celebrates King Kamehameha the First Day as a public holiday.  Next Monday, June 19, or  Juneteenth,  is a Federal holiday.  However, 22 states, including Hawaii, do not recognize this as a public holiday.  Four of these will begin to honor this day next year, not Hawaii.  Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery.  Here are the Hawaii holidays, and note three that only we have: New Year’s Day: 1st day in January Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: 3rd Monday in January Presidents’ Day: 3rd Monday in February Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day: 26th day in March Good Friday: Friday before Easter Easter:   Calculating Easter Memorial Day: Last Monday in May King Kamehameha I Day: 11th day in June Independence Day: 4th day in July Statehood Day: 3rd Friday in August Labor Day: 1st Monday in September Veterans’ Day: 11th day in November Thanksgiving Day: 4th Thursday in November Christmas: 25th day in December There are  11 paid Fede...

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

THE NEXT TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

There are 4 types of solar eclipse. Total  Partial  Annular  Hybrid  About the above graphic. On the left is a total solar eclipse. In middle is an annular solar eclipse. A hybrid eclipse appears as either a total or an annular eclipse depending on the observers location.  These only occur once in a decade. A partial eclipse is to the right. A total solar eclipse occurs about every 18 months.  However a specific location will see a total eclipse only once every 375 years.  So if you recently saw one, you'll need to travel to see another.   My wife was born on July 11.  She found out that there would be total eclipse over her Big Island on that day in 1991, so off we flew to Kailua-Kona and stayed at the King Kamehameha Hotel.  Turned out that if we had just watched from the hotel beach, we would have had the best view.  But we had a friend who lived high up on Mauna Loa, so off we went to join him.   But it was so clo...
