Summary:
  • Some details from Worldometer: New cases yesterday/million population.  In other words, don't go there today or anytime soon for those places at the top.
    • #1     Channel Islands  7509
    • #2     Brunei  3345
    • #4     New Zealand  2339
    • #5     Finland  2258

    • #65  Canada  71
    • #82  Saudi Arabia  16
    • #87  South Africa  8
    • #118  China  0.08
    • Does this mean you should go to China?  Nope.  On arrival you will be quarantined for two weeks.
  • New deaths/million population.
    • #1      Finland  13
    • #2      New Zealand  5
    • #4      Taiwan  4
    • #6      Australia  3
    • #7      Spain  2
    • #9      Italy  2
    • #11    Germany  1
    • #21    Singapore  0.7
    • #22    USA  0.7
    • #34    S. Korea  0.3
    • #39    Japan  0.2
    • #45    Saudi Arabia  0.08
    • Most countries did not report any number of new deaths.
    • As of today, the death rate for COVID-19 is 0.8 per million world population.
    • Another way of looking at COVID-19 deaths is that if you place 1241 people in a room, one of them died from this disease.
    • Similarly, one out of 14 people in the world has been confirmed to have been infected by this virus.  Asymptomaticity and non-reported surely, though, means that this ratio should be much higher.  So perhaps 10%-20% of us have had COVID-19.
  • Weekly trend:  % change of average cases/week from previous week.
    • #1       Tanzania  +174,200%
    • #2       Solomon Islands  +30.700%
    • #9       Tonga  +8100%
    • #23     Japan  +113%
    • #25     South Korea  +105% (Note:  100% means the average cases/week doubled)
    • #69     Mexico  +30%
    • #88     Australia  10%
    • #89     New Zealand  10%
    • #94     USA  +7%
    • #95     India  +6%
    •            World +3%
    • #102   Singapore +3%
    • +109   Finland  -3%
    • #111   Brazil  -5%
    • #110   Thailand  -10%
    • #120   UAE  -10%
    • #129   Taiwan  -25%
    • #135   South Africa  -20%
    • #149   Saudi Arabia  -22%
    • #146   UK  -30%
    • #179   North Korea  -63%
  • In other words, while the USA is not doing well, we are doing a lot better than many nations, even though we had the 4th highest number of new cases yesterday:
    • #1      France  119,285
    • #2      Germany  109,694
    • #3      Italy  108,674
    • #4      USA  95,400
  • Something I hadn't noticed before:  COVID tests/person.
    • #1     Denmark  21.9
    • #2     Austria  21.0
    • #3     UAE  17.1
    • #12   UK  7.6
    • #23   Israel  4.4

    • #142 S. Korea  0.3
    • #170 China  0.1
    • #208 North Korea  0.009
Today, back to Donald Trump and his continuing attempts to unconsciously ruin the Republican Party.  A poll this week showed that nearly half of Republican voters say they would cast a ballot for someone else than him in the 2024 presidential election.
That he remains as the leading candidate is a sure sign that Republicans will be in trouble on 5 November 2024.  The current leaders are:
  • Donald Trump  49%
  • Ron DeSantis  25%
  • no one else received double digits
There are numerous speculations, but here is one from CNN last month:
  • #1  Donald Trump
  • #2  Ron DeSantis of Florida
  • #3  Mike Pence
  • #4  Tim Scott, senator from South Carolina
  • #5  Ted Cruz of Texas
  • #6  Nikki Haley
  • #7  Gregg Abbott of Texas
  • #8  Glenn Youngkin of Virginia
  • #9  Rick Scott of Florida
  • #10  Tom Cotton of Arkansas
The longer he remains around, the better the chance for Democrats to prevail in 2024.  There is definitely a fraying process in place.  Add to the House January 6 Committee findings a recent disclosure of pre-eminent concern from an eminent core of Republican conservatives.
To quote from LOST, NOT STOLEN:

WASHINGTON, July 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- After reviewing every claim of fraud and irregularities brought by Donald Trump and his supporters in all 64 cases challenging the 2020 election, a group of notable conservatives has reached the "unequivocal" conclusion that Trump's claims of election fraud are unsupported by evidence.

The 72-page report by former judges and politicians, plus longtime Republican Election lawyer Benjamin Ginsberg, who you see on TV all the time these days, expressed concern about polls showing Trump's unproven claims to have significantly impacted American's confidence in the election process.  Here is the report, LOST, NOT STOLEN.

Maybe dogs should be trained to elect our president.

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicious and troublesome.  This strain has also been spreading in

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for several months.  This is caused by stress more than anythi

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These are held every five years, and there have only been
