Summary: Oh well, let's see what this looks like next week.
- First, the House January 6 Committee hearings further implicated Donald Trump. The two hearings schedule for next week have been delayed into July to process a deluge of new evidence.
- Second, the Supreme Court expanded gun rights.
- Third, the House passed the watered down but still consequential gun rights legislation, which President Joe Biden will sign.
- Fourth, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade this morning, meaning there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion, sending the matter for each state to decide what is legal.
- The gun matter is not quite a washout, as the overall effect will in the future favor Democratic candidates. Here is a Morning Consult/Politico moving poll. Percent of voters backing stricter gun laws:
- May 16 after Buffalo shooting: 60%
- May 25 after Uvalde shooting: 65%
- June 4-5: 64%
- June 10-12: 68%
- The RvW decision and the 6January2021 coup attempt by Donald Trump, will further insure for Democratic control of both houses of Congress after the 8November2022 mid-term elections.
I can stop my posting here, giving me the day off, but will instead add a few remarks crystallizing the essence of the anti-abortion decision. I last month articulated on Rowe v. Wade, so read that posting for some quick details. Want more, here is the Wikipedia entry for what happened beginning in 1973.
Morality in this country swings back and forth, and has reached the peak of conservatism from what was a liberal country half a century ago. Well, not exactly, in that the current beliefs of the Supreme Court, which was padded by Republican presidents, do not reflect the mood of today.
- An NBC poll indicated that 63% of Americans did not believe Roe v. Wade should be trashed, while 30% believed it should.
- Further, 84% of Democrats feel that abortion should be legal, compared to 33% of Republicans and 63% of Independents.
- This is why I have been saying during the past year, contrary to pundits, that Democrats will further strengthen their hold on Congress, for success depends on slight sways at the margins.
- Effectively, just on this RvW alone, more women and Democrats will vote in November, with the edge going to Democratic candidates.
- The key votes will come from Independents. If only 5-10% more because of RvW vote for the Democrat, that will make a huge difference.
- There will be a population increase. We already have too many people. This is an issue that will gain in concern, not because of RvW, but just as a worldwide problem.
- There are abortion pills that can be taken at home that weren't available half a century ago: Mifepristone, misoprostol and Levonorgestrel.
- These can be mailed to you from legal states.
- Called medical abortions by pill, 54% in the U.S.
- France 64%
- Scotland 83%
- Sweden 92%
What a week. But the weekend is here. A few more of these videos sent to me by readers to educate and entertain you:
I see that Tropical Storm Celia is heading for Hawaii and could become a hurricane today. All signs, however, show her weakening as colder waters are reached.
