SCI-TECH DAYS TO COME

First, what happened to the predicted Red Wave?  Time magazine called it a Pink Splash.  The Washington Times said:  The Vaunted Red Wave Never Hit the Shore.

In a nutshell, we won't know until tonight, or later this week, and maybe not till December, about Senate and House control.

  • At this moment, Republicans look to be in a favorable position to run the House.  It will come down to how many Democrats can flip Republican House seats in California.
Like Schrodinger’s Cat, the ambiguously fated feline in the physicist’s thought experiment who is both alive and dead simultaneously, California election results currently exist in a kind of quantum state of uncertainty.

  • Turns out that this state has Election Month.  Everything is in slow motion.
  • So when will we know for sure?  Hopefully this Friday, but it could be in December.
  • But it doesn't really matter, for the Senate could well also not be determined until December 6, when Raphael Warnock takes on Herschel Walker for another Georgia Senate runoff off.
    • Remember, there were two in 2020?  Democrats won both, and thereby gained the 50-50 split.
    • There is a minuscule chance that Warnock, now at 49.2%, could reach 50%, because a good many votes to be counted are mail-ins, mostly from the Atlanta region.  But these odds are like winning the Powerball.
    • There are two more too close to be called Senate races, but Kelly should win in Arizona, and Laxalt in Nevada, which would make the count 49 for Democrats and 50 for Republicans, making that Georgia run-off crucial.
    • But there is also a very tiny chance that the remaining votes in Nevada could push the Democrat Masto over the Republican Laxalt because most of the remaining votes will come from mail-ins in Clarke County, which has more Democrats.
    • If Laxalt wins, then it will be all up to that Georgia run-off.
  • The biggest loser was Donald Trump.
    • Florida Governor DeSantis won big, and will more and more become the main threat to Trump in 2024.
    • 50 Trump-backed candidates lost.
    • Said CNN:

Few Republicans were more involved in these midterms than Trump and the former president had a particularly bad night.  It appears that Trump knows it, too: He is “livid” and “screaming at everyone,” a Trump adviser who has been in contact with Trump’s inner circle told CNN on Wednesday morning.

  • But even more meaningful, Fox News blared:

Trump blasted across media spectrum over Republicans' midterms performance: 'Biggest loser tonight'

  • Democrats did much better than expected in state governor's races.
  • The results of the mid-term most definitely will hurt Republicans in the 2024 presidential election.
  • Democrats will do whatever they can to prop up a tainted Donald Trump in hopes that there is a big Republican fight among Trump, DeSantis and Pence.
  • Democrats are not themselves in a secure position, for if re-elected in 2024, he would be my age, 82, on the January 2023 inauguration day.  Way too old.  And there is no attractive substitute at this time.  Michelle Obama?

So in conclusion, returning to that Pink Splash article, further:

As Washington dozed off Tuesday evening, things were far more hazy, with a crimson tsunami failing to wash Democrats from their House majority and pick-up chances in the Senate seeming to downgrade from hurricane to a drizzle.

Reminds me of the LSU-Alabama football game last week.

So who did better?  All those professional political pundits or little ole me?  You need to scroll down to Monday's article to read what I said.  We split, but the bottom line is that I feel a lot better than Republicans and those experts, and most Democrats are relieved that Democracy might just have survive.  Now, on to 5November2024.

Okay, Sci-Tech Wednesday.  Rather than focus on one topic, I'll merely mention a few subjects I am contemplating:

  • What is a Megaladon.
  • The largest number.
  • The state of cold fusion.
  • Genetic cure for aging.
  • Is the neutrino the key to dark energy and matter?
  • The next mega-earthquake:  When and Where?
Yup, Hurricane Nicole will soon make landfall over Port Saint Lucie.  Then the eye will cross Florida into the Gulf, before turning north.

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicio...

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for...

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These a...
