WHAT IS RACIAL EQUALITY?

First, some latest information about COVID-19:

About the Beijing Winter Olympics:
  • Eileen Gu of San Francisco, but representing China, won a silver medal in freeski slopestyle.
  • Mikaela Schffrin finished 18th in the women's downhill.  But she competed.
  • Germany won gold, silver and bronze medals in the two-man bobsled.
  • Looks like 15-year old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva (right) will be allowed to continue competing, and seems likely to gain a second gold on Thursday.  Something to do with being a minor and thus a "protected person."  Very troublesome decision, for Russia is already on probation for a variety of doping tests.  A little known heart medication, trimetazidine, is at the heart of the issue.  Very confusing judgement call which won't be settled until sometime in the future, at which time her medals could be revoked.
Otherwise:

Now to my topic for the day:  what is racial equality?  From the 2020 U.S. Census, the racial percentage of the United States:

  • White  58%
  • Hispanic  19%
  • Black  12%
  • Asian  6%  (includes those from India)
NBA players:
  • White  17%
  • Hispanic  2%
  • Black  74%
  • Asian  0.4%
CEOs in the U.S.:
  • White  36%
  • Hispanic  5%
  • Black  19%
  • Asian  30%
But numbers can be deceiving.  Of Fortune 500 CEOs:
  • White men  86%
  • White women  7%
  • Hispanic  3%
  • Black  1%
  • Asian  3%

Harvard students:

  • White  38%
  • Hispanic  11%
  • Black  9%
  • Asian  21%
  • White  27%
  • Hispanic 17%
  • Black 0.2%
  • Asian  37%

About the NBA, ratings have continued to decline.

  • No one ever mentions that maybe one problem is that most of the players are Black.
  • 88% of Americans are non-Black, and some of them too watch the game on TV.
  • I have never once seen a White protest that there are too many Blacks on teams and that this is a viable civil rights issue.  Same for Hispanics and Asians.  But the reason is clear.  Blacks are physically superior.
  • But should there be racial equality for fairness, or maybe to increase viewership?
  • Interestingly enough, a decade ago 48% of NBA head coaches were black.
    • Today, it is down to 23%.
    • As 74% of players are Black, is something wrong here?
    • But then, only 12% of U.S. citizens are Black.
    • How do you determine what is right?
    • What does racial equality really mean?
The NFL is now in some sort of racial crisis, for only 6.3% of head coaches are Black.
  • However, 39% of assistant coaches are Black.  Isn't this too many, as Blacks are only 12% of the country?
  • Part of the problem is, what is Black?  Wikipedia says 59% of NFL players are Black, while the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport says this figure is 71%, but goes on to say that this number represents non-Whites.
  • Two more Black coaches and at least this percentage will match the national number of 12%.
  • But what about the dominance of Black players?  Shouldn't there thus be at least half Black coaches?
  • What about the fact that all NFL team owners are non-Black?  There is a South Korean owner (of the Buffalo Bills) and another was born in Pakistan (Jacksonville Jaguars).  Is this just another example of racial injustice by prejudice?  Or is this the freedom allowed in the USA?
On the academic side of racial equality, Asians are complaining that Ivy League schools discriminate against them in the admission process.  Not only test scores are used, but other factors too, and these try to strike some kind of racial and social balance.  This lawsuit against Harvard is soon to be adjudicated by the Supreme Court.  Mind you, Asians are only 6% of those in high school, but as shown above, represent 21% of the student body at Harvard.  Their contention is that this number should be even higher based on achievement and test scores.

While Harvard and CalTech have what appear to be similar parameters to select students, a closer look at the actual process shows that CalTech is noted to base the process mostly on test scores and high school achievement, while Harvard likes the more well-rounded individuals.   So how do you explain this discrepancy of undergraduate Blacks on both campus:
  • Harvard  9%
  • CalTech  0.2%

I wish not to at this time enter the controversy associated with racial equality, but how is it possible for two of our best universities to have such a gross difference in percentage of Black undergraduate students?   Is one race less competent mentally?  Or is the selection process providing what should be illegal preference to a race that has not been provided equal education?  Or both?  Or something else.  No matter how you say it, visions of eugenics and Hitler come into play.

In 2017 one of my postings was entitled:  ARE ASIANS SMARTER THAN AMERICANS?  Read that article, for at the end I actually kind of answer that question.  The reality is that it is not the brainpower but the internal motivation influenced by parental pressure and culture, which shifts over time.  I noticed that those figures were for 2010.  Here is the comparison for 2020:
  • Asian  $94,903
  • White  $74,912
  • Hispanic  $55,321
  • Black  $45,870
So one gauge of success could well be median household income.  How this happened is education.  % with bachelor's degree:

  • U.S. population  28%
  • Asian  49%
  • White  31%
  • Black  18%
  • Hispanic  13%

But does it really matter, for this argument states...If Asian-Americans are so smart, how come they have no power or influence?  Leading to the next fact:  Why then is the USA so dominantly powerful in the World today?

But returning to the topic of the day, here is another discussion entitled:  Intellectually Inferior and Physically Superior--Racist Ideologies and the Black Athlete.  For more, Wikipedia addresses Race and Intelligence.  Here is another on Eugenics.

So what is racial equality?  Maybe that is the wrong question to ask.

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicious and troublesome.  This strain has also been spreading in

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for several months.  This is caused by stress more than anythi

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These are held every five years, and there have only been
