Summary:

  • Well, the COVID-19 numbers reached another all-time high.
    • World:
      • new cases  833,856
      • new deaths  14,812
    • U.S.:
      • new cases  279,154
      • new deaths    4,207
      • with 4% the global population, the USA had 33% of all new cases
      • with 4% the global population, the USA had 28% of all new deaths
    • China had 63 new cases and no new deaths.
    • Singapore had 33 new cases and no new deaths.
    • Australia had 10 new cases and no new deaths.
    • Taiwan had 3 new cases and no new deaths.
    • New Zealand had 2 new cases and no new deaths.
    • The Diamond Princess had no new cases and no new deaths.  Of course, the passengers and crew left the ship in March.
      • The pattern of cruise line announcements has been updates, which keep delaying scheduled departures.
      • Some lines are planning to resume in the Spring, many by the Summer, and the rest that remain solvent in the Fall.
      • Last time I checked, the Diamond Princess was moored off Singapore.
      • Best for these companies to only allow cruises to begin after the crew and passengers all have a certified card showing the completion of two vaccinations 14 days before boarding.
  • But back to the pandemic, next week could actually get worse because the holiday stimulus penalty will reach a maximum.
  • There will hopefully begin to be a decline by the time Joe Biden is inaugurated on January 20.
  • After that into the summer the vaccinations should  kick-in to approach ultimate herd immunity.
  • The pandemic should be over by the end of the year, if not earlier.

I got a scare last night.

  • To begin, I took my Moderna shot at 10AM on Wednesday.
  • Ten hours later, my body temperature rose to 99F, which on the surface looks almost normal.
  • However, these thermal scans they use these days tend to read at least 1.5 F too low.  Therefore I could well have had a temperature elevation of close to 2 F.
  • By 10AM Thursday morning, my temperature dropped to 97.2 F, where it normally is, using the 15 Craigside infrared thermographic system, as I've now been doing daily for 10 months.
When I went to sleep at 10PM last (Thursday) night, I felt fine.
  • I awoke at midnight with a serious sore throat.  This would be 38 hours after inoculation.
  • My fear was that this was the onset of a cold or flu...or this novel coronavirus.
  • Some of us think worst case scenario when totally unwarranted.  After all I just took the vaccine the day before.
  • After going to the bathroom, I had difficulty sleeping.
  • An hour later it seemed that the soreness of the throat had declined, but I fell asleep not really sure what was happening.
  • I woke at 5AM and the sore throat was gone.  There might have been a slight fever, but that could have been imagined.
  • I did try to get my temperature taken, but my thermometer apparently has a battery, and I need a new one.
So I'm writing this at 8AM, 46 hours after taking that shot.  I don't feel 100%, but am fully functional.

This has been a memorable weak, but even more so when you consider that the 30-year mortgage rate yesterday dropped to an all-time low of 2.65%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has been flirting with exceeding the 30,606 set on the final day last year.  However, this won't happen today, as it appears that the U.S. Congress won't be adding any more stimulus funds at the time.

Let me end this Friday with a few interesting tidbits one person in particular sends me still on my desktop, starting with a moving sculpture:

Bonsai with relaxing sounds to end your week:

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These a...

OSAKA EXPO: Day One

Well, the day finally came for us to go to the Osaka Expo.  We were told ahead of time that the long walks would be fearful, giant lines will need to be tolerated just to get into the Expo, with those ocean breezes, it would really be cold, and so forth. Maybe it was pure luck, but we avoided all the above warnings  We had a grand day, and are looking forward to Sunday, our second day at the Expo.  So come along for an enjoyable ride. Our hotel is adjacent to the Tennoji Station, a very large one with several lines.  We upgraded our Suica card and caught the Misosuji red line towards Umeda. Transferred to the Chuo green line at the Hommachi Station.  This Osaka Metro train took us to the Yumeshima Station at the Expo site.   It was a very large mob leaving the train and heading to the entrance. Took only a few minutes to get to the entrance.  This mob was multiplied by at least a factor of  ten of those already waiting to enter.  However...

WHY YOU SHOULD CONVERT TO A JAPANESE HIGH TECH TOILET

Did you know that   Oktoberfest   in Germany is mostly in September?  The very first day of Oktoberfest 2021 was supposed to be today, September 18, extending into October 3.  Well, as in 2020, Oktoberfest was cancelled. So why is it called by that month when it is held mostly in September?  The first celebration in 1810 was in October. Did you also know that Oktoberfest is held only in Munich?  These days seven million drink more than a liter ( about three typical cans ) of beer each, costing around $11.  Except for my wife and I when we followed the crowd to board the S-Bahn to the fairgrounds near Old Town.  It was drizzling a bit.  We bought a large pretzel outside of a typical barn where beer is served.  We did not know that you needed to get this inside the hall.  So no one came to serve us beer.  After a while we decided to have lunch, and the restaurant we settled on only served wine.  Thus, we might have been the ...
