DONALD TRUMP and WOODY ALLEN

Is Delta Airlines being hurt by the Delta variant?  For one, they don't mention that strain by name.  CEO Ed Bastian indicated they haven't seen any impacts for this unfortunate similarity.  He also indicated that 72% of their staff is vaccinated, and the vast majority of passengers likewise.

A coming book by two Washington Post reporters, Carol Leonnig and Phillip Rucker, I Alone Can Fix It:  Donald J. Trumps's Catastrophic Final Year, reveals fully expected, but still shocking news.  A CNN report on how top U.S. generals planned on ways to stop Trump.  At the top, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley is quoted to say:  They may try, but they're not going to f---ing succeed.

On 4 January 2021 I said:

I've long felt that his Hail Mary would be to get his Department of Defense (after all, he is Commander in Chief), to support him in just taking over the government if everything else fails.  That discharge of Secretary of Defense Mark Esper had a cover story, which had something to do with the Middle East.  His real purpose was to join the President for Life Club and become like Putin, Kim and Xi.

Further:

Well, the Washington Post, headed by Trump's nemesis, Jeff Bezos, one-upped the President again.  Not only did they leak that Trump to Georgia phone call, they also yesterday posted an op-ed co-authored by ALL 10 living former secretaries of defense:  cautioning against any move to involve the military in pursuing claims of election fraud, arguing that it would take the country into “dangerous, unlawful and unconstitutional territory."

The 10 former Pentagon leaders also warned in their Post article of the dangers of impeding a full and smooth transition at Defense Department prior to Inauguration Day as part of a transfer to power to President-elect Joe Biden. Biden has complained of efforts by Trump-appointed Pentagon officials to obstruct the transition.

These combined actions undercut Trump's efforts to become President-for-life.  Perhaps this barrage is just the spark necessary to seriously whittle away Republican support for this now disgraced wretch.  There is sufficient intrigue now that I'm actually back to watching CNN and MSNBC.

I wondered what happened to Woody Allen, so decided to watch two of his films I had not seen.  The first, Scoop, because it was playing on the 15 Craigside movie channel, and the second, A Rainy Day in New York, because I went to Prime, and saw it was on  for free.  Again, I did not check with Rotten Tomatoes before seeing either one.  Good thing, because I might not have bothered with these productions.

Scoop is described as a romantic crime comedy, written and directed by Allen in 2006.  Rotten Tomatoes gave it poor 41/55 ratings.  Stephen Hunter of the Washington Post called it the "worst movie Woody Allen has ever made."  He might be right, but it was nevertheless entertaining with a couple of twists.  Starred Scarlett Johansson, Hugh Jackman and himself.  The whole story is preposterous, and Woody was a pale version of his earlier days with jokes that mostly failed.  His films usually have no original score, but he selects well from popular and classical music.

A Rainy Day in New York was completed in 2018, but was held back by the controversy created by the Me Too Movement.  For the record, he remains married to SoonYi, and they together have continued to denied the allegations made by Mia Farrow.  He is 85 and 35 years older than his wife.  They have been married for 23 years.

ARDiNY was finally released in Europe in 2019.  Rotten Tomatoes gave 48/55 scores.  There seems to be continued aversion to anything Woody Allen, especially by women.  However, I really enjoyed the movie.  He again wrote and directed, but did not act.  Timothee Chalamet was perfectly cast, aided by Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Liev Schreiber and Jude Law.  You'll not recognize Law.  Liked the nostalgic music.  Not quite as prominent as that one song in Something in the Rain.  More understated.

Woody recently released an American-Spanish-Italian production of Rifkin's Festival, which will no doubt get the same mediocre treatment from Rotten Tomatoes.  Two known names are Wallace Shawn and Christoph Waltz.  No Allen, although he wrote and directed.

According to all reports, his next film will be Match Point in Paris.  Not sure if this is a spoof, for he already had a Match Point in London way back in 2005.  Got good 77/81 scores, but this was before Me Too.  Ah, mystery solved, for another article indicated that this will be like Match Point.

I close with the best of what was sent to me today, from a Johnny Carson Show:

Hurricane Felicia is now up to a Category 3 at 125 MPH, and headed for Hawaii.  However, the track looks definitely south of the islands, with a weakening expected before getting too close.  However, these storms that meander to the south have a tendency to make a sudden turn to the north:

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicious and troublesome.  This strain has also been spreading in

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for several months.  This is caused by stress more than anythi

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These are held every five years, and there have only been
