ENTERTAINMENT AND THE JAPANESE YEN

I created this posting a few days ago, and thought it was too busy and statistical to post.  Had just about made up my mind to just toss it away, then I thought, perhaps a few of you actually desire numbers and such.  So why waste all this work.  For most of you who don't like this kind of detail,
just skip this early portion and scroll down to my usual style--where there is this row of asterisks--for I will then write about the wonderful state of the Yen vs Dollar conversion rate if you have Japan in your travel plans.   But, whoops, certainly looks like, again, too much data.  So I add a second row of asterisks for many to scroll down to save time.  Then, like yesterday, a segue into best films and a Taylor Swift sighting in London.

So anyway, have you been going to your hometown movie theater lately?  From Box Office Mojo, here are the figures by year for the USA.

A few noteworthy points:

  • While 2023 had 589 new films, 1977 had only 9.  Except that I looked at another site, and it had a list of 35 films for 1977.  So what is the truth?  Well, 35 is still less than 10% of the past quarter century, and less than 4% of 2018 when 993 new films were released.
  • In 1978, each film averaged gross revenues of $63,570,231, or in 2024 dollars, a value of $297,000,000.
  • In 2023, each film averaged $15,123,382, or 4 times less than in 1978.  However, when you consider that the revenues of 1978 should be inflation-enhanced to $297,000,00, the films of 1978 made nearly 20 times more than those of 2023.
  • From 2015 to 2019, grosses of from $11 million to $12 million.
  • Then the pandemic came, and the 2010 gross dropped to only a little more than $2 million.
  • Better in 2022 and 2023, but 2024 seems be plateauing, and could end up lower than 2023.  The gross/film is now less than $10 million, the second worst since 1977 to the $4.6 million of the prime pandemic year, 2020.  The Hollywood strike hurt.
  • Global cinema admissions dropped from 7.9 billion in 2018 to 1.9 billion in 2020 and 2021.
  • The forecast is 7.2 billion in 2027.
  • 2023.

The U.S. is continuing to lose ground to the world.  They already have higher revenues than the domestic gross.  China overtook the USA in 2020, and this difference is growing.  Through some averaging by FlixPatrol:
COUNTRY  GDP Per Capita  Population  Tickets  Box Office Revenues
                                                     (all in millions.......)  (billions)
  • USA          $63,051            328.2            1.1           $10.3
  • China        $17,206         1,400.0            1.7               9.3
  • Japan        $43,194             136.0            0.2              2.4
  • France      $45,454               67.1            0.2              1.6
  • India         $  6,283         1,352.6             1.6              1.6
  • S Korea    $44,292              51.7              0.2             1.6
  • UK           $46,827              67.9              0.2             1.6
  • Germany  $53,571              83.2              0.2             1.3
  • Canada    $52.144              38.0              0.1             1.0
Global cinema admissions won't rebound even by 2027, according to accounting firm PwW.
  • World admissions will reach 7.2 billion in 2027, but this was 7.9 billion in 2019.
  • But revenues will reach pre-pandemic levels of $46.5 billion by 2025, and further grow to $52.1 billion in 2027.
  • China will lead the world in 2027 with revenues of $13.2 billion.
  • The U.S. is forecasted to reach $11.9 billion in 2027, about what it was in 2018.
  • China banning film can hurt today.
    • Began in 1923 with The Ten Commandments.
    • The 1931 Frankenstein, 1933 Alice in Wonderland, etc.
    • However, Marvel worked out differences with China.
    • Only a few newer films remain unavailable.
    • Barbie and Oppenheimer had initial problems, but they are now being shown in China.  These are the most recent films I've seen in a movie theater during the opening weekend of Barbenheimer.

Plan to go to Japan?  Have you been watching the Yen vs Dollar conversion?

  • Waddled between 100 and 110 Yen to the Dollar for two years, then began climbing in March 2022, hitting 150 in October.
  • Dropped below 130 in January of 2023.
  • Back up to 150 in November of 2023.
  • Dipped down to 140 at the end of last year.
  • On April 29 reached 160.
  • Today, still around 159.
  • However, if you look back to 1971.
  • Going backwards, was at the 150+ range in the late 80s, then zoomed up to 250 in the mid to early 80s, then shot up to 300 in the 70s, and finally 350+ in 1971.
  • However, dropped to 75 in 2011.
  • Should you buy Japanese Yen today, anticipating a drop?

I don't plan to return to Japan until the Spring of 2026, for the travel blossoms, and, more so, the Osako Expo.  But if the Yen to Dollar exchange rate zooms up to 200, maybe there will be more.  On the down side, fewer Japanese will travel away to places like Hawaii, so our local economy will suffer for a couple more years, at least.

This list of ten places ends with Alan Arkin as Grandpa Hoover in Little Miss SunshineRotten Tomatoes scores of 84/79.  And while we're here, you've got to watch that final dance scene.  In fact, here are more dance scenes, 13 minutes and 48 seconds to make your day.

I fell into my subject of the day because during the past ten days--dominated by the Tokyo Summer Olympics--I actually watched only the finish of several films, one of them coincidentally, yet purposefully, twice.  Since July 23 not once have I gone to Netflix or Prime.

Flipping around channels, I saw left was 20 minutes of the 1999 Notting Hill, given 83/79 scores by Rotten Tomatoes.  What a happy ending.  No need for details, except it starred Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.  You either saw it or not, liked it or not.

I can keep doing this all day, so will stop here.  Go to this article to see the rest.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour is in London. at Wembley Stadium.  Prince William and his two eldest children, Prince George (10) and Princess Charlotte (9).  Wife Kate remains in a tenuous medical state.  Of course, Travis Kelce was there.  Oh, The Prince of Wales was celebrating his 42nd birthday.  They went backstage and took some photos, including a selfie, which appeared on Instagram.

A NEXT COVID SUBVARIANT?

By now most know that the Omicron BA.5 subvariant has become the dominant infectious agent, now accounting for more than 80% of all COVID-19 cases.  Very few are aware that a new one,   BA.4.6,  is sneaking in and steadily rising, now accounting for 13% of sequenced samples .  However, as BA.4.6 has emerged from BA.4, while there is uncertainty, the scientific sense is that the latest bivalent booster targeting BA.4 and BA.5 should also be effective for this next threat. One concern is that Evusheld--the only monoclonal antibody authorized for COVID prevention in immunocompromised individuals--is not effective against BA.4.6.  Here is a  reference  as to what this means.  A series of two injections is involved.  Evusheld was developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, and is a t ixagevimab  co-packaged with  cilgavimab . More recently, Los Angeles County reported on  subvariant BA.2.75.2 . which Tony Fauci termed suspicio...

Part 3: OUR NEXT AROUND THE WORLD ODYSSEY

Before I get into my third, and final, part of this cruise series, let me start with some more newsworthy topics.  Thursday was my pandemic day for years.  Thus, every so often I return to bring you up to date on the latest developments.  All these  subvariants  derived from that Omicron variant, and each quickly became dominant, with slightly different symptoms.  One of these will shock you. There has been a significant decline in the lost of taste and smell.  From two-thirds of early patients to now only 10-20% show these symptoms. JN.1, now the dominant subvariant, results in mostly mild symptoms. However, once JN.1 infects some, there seem to be longer-lasting symptoms. Clearly, the latest booster helps prevent contracting Covid. A competing subvariant,  BA.2.86,  also known as Pirola , a month ago made a run, but JN.1 prevailed. No variant in particular, but research has shown that some of you will begin to  lose hair  for...

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These a...
