It wasn't in the title, but yesterday was sleep, Part 1. That lots of sleep was probably why there was minimal weight gain on a 21-day cruise was a revelation. Then to do the research showing the role that sleep can play in your regular home life was a pleasant discovery.
If you've kept up with this blog site, my various articles on sleep surely must have already educated you to the
benefits of good sleep:
- Boosts immune system.
- Strengthens your heart.
- Puts you in a better mood.
- Increases your productivity.
- Improves memory.
Conversely, less than 5 hours of sleep/night negatively affects the above, and literally can endanger your life. For example, the
AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that you're twice as likely to get in a car accident if you "only" get 6-7 hours of sleep, versus 8 hours. Also too, low sleep reduces your attempts at exercise, which, like sleep and good nutrients, is good for your body.
People complain that my postings are too long. So, today, this will be it. After all, this is Christmas Eve.
Well, maybe a bit more, for I've missed Opus, and after all these years, kept only three "dolls." On the left is a Matryoshka, with, I think, 19 more inside. Bought this when I went to Moscow more than 40 years ago. In the middle is a cat, a gift from my freshman roommate, Jim Seger, who sent this to me more than half a century ago. Then Opus, who I've had for a third of a century.
Gus Berkeley Breathed had
Bloom County from 1980, winning a Pulitzer Prize for his comic strip, and essentially retired in 1989 at the age of 32. Opus was Breathed's first animal. He was slightly drunk and listening to Iowa City's only rock station, KRNA,
Magnam Opus by the group Kansas. Thus the name.
He quit because of deadlines. Took him a quarter century to return.
In 2015 he began posting new strips on Facebook, and last year penned a series of strips featuring characters from Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes.
