Summary:
- The U.S. has been on a plateau for a month, and not decreasing. However, we are approaching a 50% inoculation rate, and cases have dropped 94% over the past six months.
- The World, though, appears to be declining, and, perhaps too, Brazil and India.
- South Africa and Africa look troublesome.
- South America remains a problem area.
- Japan only had 926 new cases yesterday, with 31 deaths. If their decline continues, daily deaths should drop below 20 by the time of the Tokyo Olympics.
- A puzzlement is China.
- While they only had 25 new cases with no new deaths yesterday, their vaccines (Sinopharm and Sinovac Biotech) seem to be deficient, especially against the variants.
- Effectiveness:
- Sinopharm = 78%
- Sinovac = 51%
- Pfizer and Moderna = more than 90%
- The Seychelles, Chile, Bahrain and Mongolia have had 50-68% of their populations fully inoculated with Chinese vaccines. All ranked in the top 10 last week with the worst COVID-19 outbreaks.
- The #1 vaccinated country is Seychelles. They used Sinopharm, and their current new cases/day is 716/million.
- The #2 vaccinated country is Israel. They used Pfizer, and their new cases/day is 5/million.
- China's vaccine diplomacy is failing. However, their contention is that they have significantly reduced the number of deaths.
- Around 35% of people in the world received at least one shot, led by UAE getting close to being almost fully vaccinated. These data come from a second source.
- Malta has had 58% fully vaccinated.
- The USA is just about in the top ten with 45% fully vaccinated.
- Most of the countries in the world are still in the single digit.
As predicted on Monday by betting odds, Eric Adams will prevail in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary. Curtis Sliwa will be the Republican winner. His campaign is pro-cop. But Adams was one, and no doubt will prevail on November 2.
You likely don't realize the miracle of your amazing body. Human life starts with two cells, a spermatozoon from the male and oocyte from the female to produce a new organism, the zygote--just one cell--leading to around 30 trillion cells in an adult.
The April issue of Scientific American had on the final page some graphic science (right--click on it to read the details), indicating that various forms of fluids and solids (like the calcium in your bones) make up 32% of you, with 68% being cells. Most of them are in the blood and gut. According to the Weizmann Institute of Israel, these cells are:
- By total mass, 72% fat and muscle, which are good for an average of 12-50 years, after which time they are replaced with new ones. However, they represent only 0.1% of all cells.
- Many cells in the heart, eyes and brain are good for your whole life.
- Much of the remaining cells by mass are tiny ones in the blood and gut. For example, a red blood cell is 6,000 times smaller than a fat cell.
- Blood cells are replaced every 3 to 120 days,
- The gut lining is renewed less than weekly.
- Thus, effectively, your body makes 330 billion new cells/day, or the equivalent of a new you every 80 days.
In addition, our body harbors 38 trillion (more cells than what we have in our body) bacteria and viruses. However, they in total weigh only around half a pound. Relative sizes (again, worth your while to click and read--graphically shows you how large a COVID-19 virus is compared to a red blood cell):
To end, twin pandas were born in Tokyo at Ueno Zoo. Mother is 15-year old Shin Shin and father is Ri Ri. They had another child in 2017, Xiang Xiang. There are 1864 pandas in the bamboo forests of Central China and 400 in captivity. Pandas in Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam all expired. Here is one of the new cubs, weighing in at 4.37 ounces:
