THE TRUTH ABOUT MARIAH CAREY

Monday is many times my film/food day.  I'll get to the Mariah/cuisine part, but will start with a dream to which I awoke this morning that was unique in two aspects.

All this began last night when I began watching on Netflix Something in the Rain, a Korean series starring Son Ye-Jin.  This was her return from a five year absence, and led to Crash Landing on You, which was rated 98 by Rotten Tomatoes.  Only scored 75 from Rotten Tomatoes, but has an appealing nature, where popular American songs are inserted to set the right mood.  Two in particular, Stand by Your Man by Tammy Wynette, and Save the Last Dance for Me by Bruce Willis were repeated numerous times.  I couldn't quite recognize the singer of the second song, and was astonished to later find that this was the Bruce Willis of all those action films.

So anyway, I began viewing from around 7:45PM, and this series apparently has 16 episodes of 2 hours or more each.  To shorten my travail, I did not realize I was into the second episode when it was too late to stop.  There is no standard re-setting of the titles between each stage.  I thus could not get to bed until after midnight and my sleep schedule was thrown off, perhaps leading to a strange dream.

This was a long one, but I could only clearly remember the final minute or two.  I recall driving on the freeway by the Honolulu International Airport to pick up my bags at a hotel.  It was late afternoon, and I looked at my schedule, which showed that on June 7 I had to move into another hotel on the other side of the freeway, something that makes no sense for this city.  On the way out I saw someone in the lobby who mentioned that the dinner for 29 I was arranging for Donald Trump was called off because he was upset at something.  This is the first time in my life my mind recognized an actual date, which was exactly correct, and I don't remember ever having Trump in any of my dreams before.  Absolutely weird.

So on to the food part, beginning with the Belmont Stakes, where on Saturday I prepared a Belmont Jewel plus Bacon Bourbon Caramel Popcorn.  I start with the calamansi on my lanai because citrus is needed:

I watched the preliminary Manhattan Stakes with the Belmont Jewel and Bacon Bourbon Caramel Popcorn.  You might have noticed that much of the volume was lost in the frying process.  The next time I should more closely follow directions.  But the taste for both were full-flavored and yummy.  For lunch I had wing dings, not an example of healthy eating, but representative of the stuff that is sold at sporting events.  While engorging myself, I saw Essential Quality come in first...and note that he is gray, not brown.

The Kentucky Derby was the Run for the Roses and the Preakness featured Black-eyed Susans.  Now you know that the Belmont Stakes provides white carnations to the victor.

My other noteworthy dishes were "bowls."  You've heard of a beef bowl, and perhaps, too, poke bowl, both over rice.  I had a foie gras bowl, but not over rice, but vegetables, plus beer and a Cabernet Sauvignon.  Then an elegant tacos bowl, again featuring vegetables, with beer and margarita:

The current state of my flower garden:

This quote was sent to me today, supposedly made by Mariah Carey:

"Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff."

I checked with Snopes, and can say with absolute certainty that the above is FALSE.  Supposedly coming from a 1996 interview with UK's Radio 1, it was reprinted in British publication The Face, then appeared in Cupcake, it was quoted in VOX (a British entertainment publication), then picked up in the UK newspaper The Independent in May of 1996.  The internet went wild with it and this fabricated quote began appearing throughout the world, including by Herb Caen of The San Francisco Chronicle.

By July of 1996 the statement was debunked.  However, some things never die on the world wide web, and here, a quarter century later, Carey still suffers.  Why?  Possibly because she was seen by some as an unsophisticated pop diva who had a pretty face and great figure, who achieved success by appealing to the lowest common denominator in musical taste.  Something so uncaring and self-indulgent was thus unquestionably passed along, maybe in jealousy.

The truth is that Mariah Carey is respected for her various philanthropic efforts, including concerts to raise money for Camp Mariah for impoverished city youths.  She has three Guinness records, sold more than 200 million records, and is worth $320 million.  She has two girls, twins, with her second husband, Nick Cannon, and is currently single.

THE ENIGMATIC PHIL SPECTOR

The first presidential debate of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ended up in a near tie.  Both lost.  However, it was an unmitigated disaster for Biden, who just might be too old to win this re-election. For Trump, it was a reinforcement of what he does all the the time, lie.   There will be significant calls for the Democratic Party to work out "something" to replace Biden as their presidential candidate.  Suddenly, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Michelle Obama are added to the spotlight.  But what can "legally" occur at the August Democratic Convention? The situation is different on the Republican side, as Trump is the Republican Party, and no matter if he gets 4 years at his felony sentencing on July 9, or even if the Supreme Court determines he is not immune next week or later, he will be the presidential candidate. Trump is a damned boastful liar and convicted felon, but that is the only option for Republicans.  His vice-presidential choice now become...

THE TRUMP ENERGY PROGRAM

From  Time  magazine, I begin with a slew of Trump topics.  You can read the details. The unpopular Big Beautiful Bill is now in the House . The only truly effective anti-Trump person:  Elon Musk. The Trump Gaza ceasefire proposal . The July 4th Free American Anti-Trump Protest planned across the USA . This site began as a renewable energy and environment blog, and has evolved to just about any subject.  I try to keep Wednesdays for sci-tech, with perhaps a monthly focus on energy.  More recently, I've drawn from the  Energy Matters  info sent to me by the American Energy Society.  I'm inserting direct quotes this time to eliminate my predilections for more credibility. This service starts with some broad topics. - Fossil fuels: Helium is locked in a supply crunch, and prices are surging. - Renewables: Congress will probably pass new renewable fuel standards for 2026 and 2027. - Policy: President Trump is now focused on Califor...

OSAKA EXPO: Day One

Well, the day finally came for us to go to the Osaka Expo.  We were told ahead of time that the long walks would be fearful, giant lines will need to be tolerated just to get into the Expo, with those ocean breezes, it would really be cold, and so forth. Maybe it was pure luck, but we avoided all the above warnings  We had a grand day, and are looking forward to Sunday, our second day at the Expo.  So come along for an enjoyable ride. Our hotel is adjacent to the Tennoji Station, a very large one with several lines.  We upgraded our Suica card and caught the Misosuji red line towards Umeda. Transferred to the Chuo green line at the Hommachi Station.  This Osaka Metro train took us to the Yumeshima Station at the Expo site.   It was a very large mob leaving the train and heading to the entrance. Took only a few minutes to get to the entrance.  This mob was multiplied by at least a factor of  ten of those already waiting to enter.  However...
