But first, exactly four years after Donald Trump attempted a coup to continue as president, the U.S. Congress certified him as our next president. What is wrong with the voters of the country? Ironically enough, Vice President Kamala Harris presided. From NBC News:
“Two months ago, the American people elected Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States of America,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, as Republicans clapped. “Thank you for that very generous applause. It’s OK. There are no election deniers on our side of the aisle.”
“One should love America when you win and when you lose,” Jeffries continued. “That’s the patriotic thing to do, and that’s the America that House Democrats will fight hard to preserve because we love this country. America is bigger than any one campaign, any one election or any one individual."
I'll start with Netflix, for it is #1 in the world with 283 million subscribers. #2 is Amazon Prime with 230 million and #3 is Disney+ with 159 million. #10 is Peacock with 36 million, #15 Apple with 25 million and #58 FuboTV with 2 million. 84 streaming channels are listed.
It was like watching a film a day for four days, as I saw all nine episodes of Squid Game, Season One. I'm getting ready to binge on Season Two. I only have around 50 different series I have begun, but rarely went passed episode two. Yet, on New Year's Day 2025 picked Netflix's Queen of Tears. Why? Rated 100/93 by Rotten Tomatoes. Started rather slowly, but a twist came at the end of the first chapter, which hooks you into going on to E2. I added another 100-rated Korean production, Silenced. Tough film to watch, but it indicates the obvious crooked South Korean judiciary process.
Time magazine just had an article on what's new on Netflix in January 2025.
- A whole bunch of films and series.
- Maybe more important is what productions are leaving.
- In particular, I've watched most of season one of The Last Tango in Halifax, which is rated 95/90 on Netflix, and there are five seasons, all going. Each episode is about an hour long, and there are 30 of them. No way can I find 25 hours in the next few weeks, especially as it is kind of plodding.
- The film Babadook, with a 98 RT rating.
- The film Cats has only a 19% score, but it does have some redeeming virtues. Cast includes Taylor Swift, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson (who sings Memory), Rebel Wilson, James Corden, Ian McKellen, and many others. Elaine Paige originally sang Memory on the West End, London, from where the Broadway show came.
Amazon Prime:
- New film, the 2005 A Sound of Thunder, Rotten Tomatoes, 6/18, lowest I've seen in a long time. I refer to this movie a lot as a good example of The Butterfly Effect, a term coined by meteorologist Edward Lorenz in the 1960s.
- ELVIS: That's the Way It Is, Special Edition, 2000, 109 min, 92/94. Of his 10August1970 Las Vegas concert. And I was there. Really. So was Sammy Davis Jr. See if you can find me. Front row table.
- Imagine: John Lennon, 1988, 1h46m, doc. 91/90. If you want to skip Prime, link to Imagine for the full doc.
- Just on January 1 came these films.

The Golden Globes were awarded last night. Read my posting of Saturday which predicted the winners. Or the details provided by Time. I think the most memorable moment was 62-year old Demi Moore finally winning something important in the movie The Substance. The substance, incidentally, is a black market serum that makes Moore younger, more beautiful and more perfect. But I warn you, this is a body horror flick.
