DAY 20. GEORGE TOWN, CAYMAN ISLANDS

Most don't know that there is a country in South America called Guyana.  The capital and largest city is Georgetown.  The country is between Venezuela and Suriname, with Brazil to the south, and faces the Atlantic Ocean.

That is not where we are.  There is a self-governing British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean Sea called Cayman Islands, located 277 miles south of Cuba, 310 miles northwest of Jamaica and 480 miles southwest of Miami.

There are three islands, and on Grand Cayman is George Town, the capital.  City has a population of 41,000, which is half the total of the entire territory.
Grand Cayman has become a haven for the rich, for no tax is charged for income earned or stored.
  • GDP/capita is $109,684, the highest in the Caribbean.  The World Bank, however, only says $96,074/capita, occupying 7th place in the world.  Monaco is #1 with $240,861/capita, Lichtenstein #2 $187,267, Luxembourg #3 128,259, and Cayman #7.  The USA is #12 at $81,695.
  • This is a good reason why you might have read novels and films linked to this island, as, for example, The Firm, by John Grisham.

Well, tomorrow we venture into George Town.  For today, Day 19, we had dinner at Teppanyaki, maybe the best show we've ever seen, especially with the rice,

Started with Asahi Beer and hot sake.
Soup.
Salad.
Then the rice show.  The rice comes first here.  Chef keeps singing songs, and is entertaining.
Chick survived.  Veggies.
Onion mountain.
My rice with veggies.
Then came the steak.
My meal,
My steak,
Cleaning the grill.
Dessert.
As this is Halloween, there was a costume contest.  The head was not competing,

Who won?  Left early, for we need to actually wake up in the morning to make the George Town tour.  All time low walk day.  1975 steps.

Woke up at 8AM, four hours earlier than usual,  Had a small breakfast.  Saw this buffet for the first time on Day 20.  Not much, so we didn't miss anything at all.  Then on to the tender to port.
Each of these boats holds 250 people.
We boarded a large van that holds 17 people.  Some scenes,
Governor's Mansion, which we can't see.
Nice beaches.
We then went to Hell.
Next, samples of Tortuga rum cake and rum.

Our final stop was to a green turtle hatchery.
You can tickle a smaller turtle at the back of its neck, after going through an elaborate process of sanitizing your hands.
Then on to iguanas and alligators.
Our first cruise tour might well be a final one on the Norwegian Encore.  A sunset departure to Miami.
