ACAPULCO

On the way to Acapulco we had a mild nightlife, starting with an Oriental Dinner in the Garden Cafe.

Mostly Chinese food, and not much at that.  The hot sour soup was lukewarm, but a shot of Johnny Walker Black Label helped.  Everything was too salty.  Watched ADDA in the Atrium.
That was it.  Only 3366 steps today.
We are now in Acapulco.  View from our cabin.

Looks like Waikiki.
Lunch of salad and pho, with a Mexican beer and rosé.
Yesterday, I essentially walked 3/4ths of mile to gather the buffet lunch.  Today, only half a mile.
Acapulco de Juárez is commonly called Acapulco.
  • 3080 miles south of Seattle.
  • 1987 miles south of San Diego.
  • 240 miles south of Mexico City.
  • 2223 miles north of Panama Canal.
  • 3775 miles east of Honolulu.
  • By the 8th century, the Acapulco Bay area had a small culture dominated by Omecs.
  • Followed by Mayan,,then the Aztec Empire around 1500.
  • The Spanish came in the 1520s as linked to Hernán Cortés.
  • Cortez built a major road to Mexico City.
  • In 1614, Hasekura Tsunenaga  (Acapulco statue),  a 100 Japanese Christians and 22 samurai of Shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu visited, and some married locals, staying here.
  • Acapulco's importance as a port increased during California Gold Rush.
  • The city population was no more than 5000 until it came into prominence in the 1940's through the 1960's as a getaway for Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Eddie Fisher and Brigitte Bardot, and millionaires.  Even JFK and Jacqueline.
  • Cliff diving started in the 1930's at the La Quebrada Cliff.  They jump from 130 feet into an inlet only 23 feet wide and 13 feet deep.
  • While Elvis' movie Fun in Acapulco featured the name, filming did not occur here.  Only 57/50 Rotten Tomatoes ratings.
  • Acapulco hosted the sailing events for the 1968 Summer Olympics.
  • A tollway connected the Acapulco with Mexico City in the 1990's, paving the way for Acapulco becoming a weekend destination, the drive taking 3.5 hours, one way.
  • Sailfish is plentiful, such that boat captains are known to bet with customers that if nothing is caught, the trip is free.
  • The city was devastated by the 1997 Hurricane Pauline, killing more than 100.  There were 30-foot waves.  Hurricane Otis, another Category 5, again caused devastation in 2023.
  • Acapulco is Mexico's largest beach and resort city, with a Metro population of 852,622.
  • Bullfighting is legal in Mexico.
  • Trash is thrown into the streets, much of which ends up in the bay.
  • However, worst of all, since 2014, has suffered from a massive upsurge in gang violence and homicides.
    • Half a dozen police with rifles outside our cruise ship.
    • Get this.  It is only the ninth-deadliest city in Mexico, but 10 deadliest in the world.
    • The military disarmed the local police force because it was infiltrated by drug gangs.
    • The State Department simply says don't go to Acapulco.
    • Population dropped from 2010 to 2020.
  • Plus, the weather at 2PM is 86 F, but feels like 97 F, according to AccuWeather.
  • Thus, we decided to avoid any tour today.

The World Series begin on Friday at Dodgers Stadium, 8PM ET on Fox.  New York Yankees vs Los Angeles Dodgers.

  • If you think you've seen them doing this before, yes, this their 12th time, five more than the next two, Yankees against the San Francisco Giants.
  • The last time they met was in 1981.  Yankees won the first two at Yankee Stadium.  But the Dodgers won the next four, the first three by one run.
  • In 1978 Yankees won, 4-2.
  • The 1956 series was won by the Yankees, 4-3, when these were the Brooklyn Dodgers.  In Game 5, Yankees right-hander Don Larsen threw a perfect game.
  • The first time they met was in 1941, won by the Yankees, 4-1.
We are two weeks away from Tuesday, November 5.

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These a...

OSAKA EXPO: Day One

Well, the day finally came for us to go to the Osaka Expo.  We were told ahead of time that the long walks would be fearful, giant lines will need to be tolerated just to get into the Expo, with those ocean breezes, it would really be cold, and so forth. Maybe it was pure luck, but we avoided all the above warnings  We had a grand day, and are looking forward to Sunday, our second day at the Expo.  So come along for an enjoyable ride. Our hotel is adjacent to the Tennoji Station, a very large one with several lines.  We upgraded our Suica card and caught the Misosuji red line towards Umeda. Transferred to the Chuo green line at the Hommachi Station.  This Osaka Metro train took us to the Yumeshima Station at the Expo site.   It was a very large mob leaving the train and heading to the entrance. Took only a few minutes to get to the entrance.  This mob was multiplied by at least a factor of  ten of those already waiting to enter.  However...

WHY YOU SHOULD CONVERT TO A JAPANESE HIGH TECH TOILET

Did you know that   Oktoberfest   in Germany is mostly in September?  The very first day of Oktoberfest 2021 was supposed to be today, September 18, extending into October 3.  Well, as in 2020, Oktoberfest was cancelled. So why is it called by that month when it is held mostly in September?  The first celebration in 1810 was in October. Did you also know that Oktoberfest is held only in Munich?  These days seven million drink more than a liter ( about three typical cans ) of beer each, costing around $11.  Except for my wife and I when we followed the crowd to board the S-Bahn to the fairgrounds near Old Town.  It was drizzling a bit.  We bought a large pretzel outside of a typical barn where beer is served.  We did not know that you needed to get this inside the hall.  So no one came to serve us beer.  After a while we decided to have lunch, and the restaurant we settled on only served wine.  Thus, we might have been the ...
