HAVE YOU HEARD OF HV.1?

Taking a look at the weekly Worldometer numbers:
  • Cases during the past week per million population,
    • Singapore  2617
    • New Zealand  693
    • Russia 283
    • Germany 273
    • USA  146
    • Hong Kong 31
    • World  24
  • But, again, many countries have stopped reporting.
HV.1 is now the dominant Covid variant in the U.S.

  • It is of course a subvariant of Omicron, as are all the prevalent strains today.
  • First appeared this summer.
  • By October overtook EG.5 (also known as Eris), and is now responsible for one-third of all Covid-19 cases.  HV.1 is a sublineage of Omicron SBB.1.9.2, and a direct descendent of EG,5.
  • #3 is FL.1.5,1, also known as Fornax.
  • Eris, or EG.5, remains as the #1 world strain.
  • Health experts say there is no reason to panic about HV.1, although it is good at spreading to others.  Does not produce more hospitalizations.
  • Can be detected by standard tests.  And, by the way, health insurance plans are required to reimburse eight at-home Covid-19 tests PER MONTH.  But check the expiration date.
  • The latest Covid booster offers good protection for HV.1.  However, as of the end of October, only 4.5% of Americans have done so.  This should still be free for all. The percentage is just about up to 100% for 15 Craigside.
Here is an interesting article about Hong Kong that wonders what happened to the nightlife today, whether the fear of Covid is the reason, and if the party will soon return.  In a nutshell:
  • Yes, people are more cautious today.
  • However, since the crackdown, many expatriates left the country, more well-to do residents have at least temporarily moved away and a bunch of companies just uprooted to other locations,  One has to more careful what one says, so the best way to avoid problems is to party at home.
  • There is some activity during happy hours after work, but the 2AM/3AM crowd is no longer there.
  • Some blame the Pandemic of converting many to TV and Netflix.
  • The strong Hong Kong dollar also means that locals go into China to have fun, for it's cheaper there.
  • The sense is that Singapore is now more active at night than Hong Kong.

We again just rested today.  It was raining.  This was the 7th and final day of our first Japan Rail Pass.  Thought about lunch in Niigata, but it was supposed to also rain there.  We also cancelled our trip to Matsumoto.  But we did have an excellent unagi dinner at the Top of Yebisu.

Woke up this morning to a sunny and sparkling Tokyo, with a magnificent view of Mount Fuji.

Went down for breakfast and the line was enormous.  However, we saw a photographer taking wedding photos.

This was our third Tokyo Westin breakfast, and it's beginning to look like 15 Craigside already.
Walked 2403 steps during the past 24 hours.
We move to the Ritz Carlton in a couple of hours.

HONOLULU TO SEATTLE

The story of the day is Hurricane Milton, now a Category 4 at 145 MPH, with a track that has moved further south and the eye projected to make landfall just south of Sarasota.  Good news for Tampa, which is 73 miles north.  Milton will crash into Florida as a Category 4, and is huge, so a lot of problems can still be expected in Tampa Bay with storm surge.  If the eye had crossed into the state just north of Tampa, the damage would have been catastrophic.  Milton is a fast-moving storm, currently at 17 MPH, so as bad as the rainfall will be over Florida, again, a blessing.  The eye will make landfall around 10PM EDT today, and will move into the Atlantic Ocean north of Palm Bay Thursday morning. My first trip to Seattle was in June of 1962 just after I graduated from Stanford University.  Caught a bus. Was called the  Century 21 Exposition .  Also the Seattle World's Fair.  10 million joined me on a six-month run.  My first. These a...

OSAKA EXPO: Day One

Well, the day finally came for us to go to the Osaka Expo.  We were told ahead of time that the long walks would be fearful, giant lines will need to be tolerated just to get into the Expo, with those ocean breezes, it would really be cold, and so forth. Maybe it was pure luck, but we avoided all the above warnings  We had a grand day, and are looking forward to Sunday, our second day at the Expo.  So come along for an enjoyable ride. Our hotel is adjacent to the Tennoji Station, a very large one with several lines.  We upgraded our Suica card and caught the Misosuji red line towards Umeda. Transferred to the Chuo green line at the Hommachi Station.  This Osaka Metro train took us to the Yumeshima Station at the Expo site.   It was a very large mob leaving the train and heading to the entrance. Took only a few minutes to get to the entrance.  This mob was multiplied by at least a factor of  ten of those already waiting to enter.  However...

WHY YOU SHOULD CONVERT TO A JAPANESE HIGH TECH TOILET

Did you know that   Oktoberfest   in Germany is mostly in September?  The very first day of Oktoberfest 2021 was supposed to be today, September 18, extending into October 3.  Well, as in 2020, Oktoberfest was cancelled. So why is it called by that month when it is held mostly in September?  The first celebration in 1810 was in October. Did you also know that Oktoberfest is held only in Munich?  These days seven million drink more than a liter ( about three typical cans ) of beer each, costing around $11.  Except for my wife and I when we followed the crowd to board the S-Bahn to the fairgrounds near Old Town.  It was drizzling a bit.  We bought a large pretzel outside of a typical barn where beer is served.  We did not know that you needed to get this inside the hall.  So no one came to serve us beer.  After a while we decided to have lunch, and the restaurant we settled on only served wine.  Thus, we might have been the ...
